Crazy Challenge Connection RaT #19

Crazy Challenge Connection RaT #19 hosted by Crazy Challenge Connection on Goodreads.

'Tis that time again :) Our next Read-a-thon will begin at 12:01am Sunday, December 29, and continue until midnight on Saturday, January 4, a total of seven days. (Use your local time for start/end times.) We're hoping that this will help you finish your December reading lists/challenges and get a head start on next month's reading!

Note: Yes, we know that this is a crazy busy time of year for everyone, but we also know that a lot of us have challenges that end on December 31, and might need a boost to get them finished on time.

Again, our goals for this RaT will be to:
(1) complete any challenges ending in December that you haven't finished yet and start on January's challenges (when appropriate) and/or
(2) work on that pile of library books -- or those new books you got as gifts from family/friends! -- that's waiting for your attention and/or
(3) read anything you want to read, just because!

If none of these goals fit your reading plan, then create your own goal and let us know what you plan to accomplish :) As you read, be sure to check in here and let us know what you've read, how it fits your goals, how you rate the book, and anything else you want to tell us about it!

So ... who's in? :D

I am going to take part in this challenge and hope to read at least 3 books. 2 to complete my 2013 challenges and 1 to start the 2014 challenges.

For Nicholas Sparks 2013:

A Book A Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge start

A Book A Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge hosted by Nothing But Reading Challenges.

Whatever the season or day: hot and blazing in Summer; grey and rainy in Spring and Autumn; or cold and windy in the Winter. They all have something in common: eventually we grow lazy, lethargic, and bored. One of the best ways to avoid it is being busy. Or better yet, being busy reading.

So, grab your books, find your perfect reading spot and let's fight the boredom one day at a time.

Duration: 1 year from the day you start

Rules:Re-reads allowed. Any format (audio, ebook, graphic novel, book, etc.) acceptable.

Boredom Levels
Sleepy Day ► Read 2 - 3 Books
Lazy Week ► Read 4 - 6 Books
Slow Fortnight ► Read 7 - 9 Books
Bored Month ► Read 10 - 13 Books
Never Ending Year ► Read 14+ Books

1 - Is the first day of the month. Read a book where the main character (MC) has a first experience of sorts. Or is a one word title. Or is the first of a series.

2 – One is good, two is better. Read a romance book or a book that has a partnership.
Subgenres of romance under the spoiler
(view spoiler)
Two can also mean repetition. Read a book about second chances.

3 – Being the third wheel is never funny. Read a book that has a wheel on the cover. Or has a love triangle. You can also read a book about three best friends.

4 – 4th of July is Independence Day. Read a book with a red, white and blue cover, or that is set on the US, or has the US flag on the cover. Or read a book where the main character is fighting for his independence or for some greater good.

5 - High Five. Read a book where a character is a sports fan or has a best buddy. Or read one about a character with a strong need for approval. There are five points on a star. Read a book with a star on the cover or title.

6 - In numerology the number 6 is considered a feminine, nurturing, "mother" number. Read a book where the main female character is a mother or becomes a mother.
In a biblical sense, both man and the serpent were created on the sixth day, therefore, the number six represents both man and rebellion. Read a book were the main character is a man or about a rebellion or resistance to some regimen.

7–Lucky Seven. Read a book where a character is extremely lucky or a book about anything game related (gambling, bets, poker night, drinking game, you get my point). In the Old Testament, 7 is the number of days it took for God to create the world. Read a book with a tight deadline.

8– Magic Eight Ball. Read a Magical Book or a book where a character predicts the future (visions, premonitions, tarot readings, any method counts).

9–Is the name of a film set in a post-apocalyptic future. Read a book set in, or where a character comes from, a post-apocalyptic future

10 – 10th of June is the day of Camoes, Portugal and the Portuguese communities. Read a poetry book or a book that has a writer as the main character. Or read a book where the protagonist is Portuguese or Brazilian or speaks Portuguese. Or read a book where the main character struggles to save a precious item.

11–Its etymological originates from a Germanic compound ainlif meaning "one left". Read a book with only "one left" - it can be the only option left, or the only survivor, or the last of a set of events, the last book left in a series, etc.

12– 12 days of Christmas. Read a book about Christmas, Christmas songs or that has a cumulative title, like Once Bitten, Twice Shy. 12 is also the governmental perfection. Read a book with a character or author named as one of the 12 Apostles, or set in Israel. There are 12 zodiacal signs. Read a book with zodiac or one of the signs on the cover or in the title

13– Black cats, voodoo dolls and Friday the 13th. Read a book about superstitions, bad luck or the occult. Friday the 13th is also known among programmers for causing a computer bug. Read a book about computer viruses, computer hacking or some technological challenge like in Digital Fortress.

14–The 14th amendment defines US citizenship rights, and importantly, gave African Americans the right to citizenship in America. Read a book where a character moves to the US, or is based in 19th century America.

15–The atomic number of phosphorus, which emits a faint glow upon exposure to oxygen – hence its name given from Greek mythology, meaning "light-bearer." Read a book showing the faint glow of light on the cover.

16– Sweet 16. Read a book where a character (doesn’t have to be the MC) reaches 16 or has a sweet 16 party. Or read a Young Adult book.

17–The shortest form of Japanese poetry (known as Haiku) contains exactly 17 syllables. Read something set in Japan. It takes 17 muscles to produce a smile. Read something that puts a smile on your face.

18–Number of holes on a golf course. Read a book about a professional sportsperson, or where a character plays golf, or golf is part of the title or cover of a book

19–The worst worldwide influenza pandemic ended in 1919. Read a book from the medical genre, or a book with a character who is a Doctor or Nurse, or a book where someone dies from the flu.

20–20/20. Read a “number one book”: about a top student, a perfect score, a best seller. You can also read a book where a character has one of the senses highlighted.

21 – Is the legal age for drinking. Read a book where someone has a drinking problem, is an ex-alcoholic or overcome some addiction. 21 can also be Black Jack. Read a book set or where the character goes to Las Vegas, or has a casino or a game of Black Jack or vingt et un is involved.

22–In French, "22" is used as a phrase to warn of the coming of the police (typically "22, v'là les flics!", "22, here come the cops!"). Read a book that is a police procedural, or has a strong police presence.

23–"W" is the 23rd letter of the alphabet. It has two points down and three points up. Half of W is V, which is the Roman numeral for 5. The "W" on your keyboard is right between the 2 and 3. Read a book with a title or series name that begins with "W." Or was written by an author with a first or last name that begins with "W."

24–There are 24 hours in a day. Read a book in one day. Or one that takes place all in one day.

25–British slang for £25 is "Pony." Read a book about a horse or has a picture of one on the cover.

26 – 26th January is the Australia day or the arrival of the First Fleet. Read a book set in Australia or aboard of a ship. You can also read an historical book with action taking place on the 18th century.

27– Is the perfect cube (3 X 3 X 3). Read a book from 3 different trilogies - yes, that means 3 books - Or read a book about a mathematic riddle or code, books like The Da Vinci Code or The Eight are a good example for this one.

28–The number of dominoes in standard domino sets. Read something with a black and white cover.

29–and holding. Read a book where the main character is about to turn 30.

30–Over the hill or don't trust anyone over 30. Read a book where a character has an abnormal life spam and is older than he/she appears (vampire, fae, warlock, elf, etc).

31 – Is the last day of the month. Read a book about last chances. Or read the final book of a series. You can also read a book about the end of a cycle or a new beginning.

It seems I just can't stop joining challenges at the moment, at least they are year long ones.

My goal is: Never Ending Year ► Read 14+ Books

Start date today 18th of August 2013 and I will finish by 17th of August 2014.

September 2013 Takeover Challenge Start

September 2013 Takeover Challenge hosted by Lisa Kay on Nothing but Reading Challenges.

Goal: Yes, it is that month again. My birthday month! So, I’m taking over this month’s challenge. Choose your books from the “Ten Things That Are On My Mind” categories below.

Duration: September 1 - 30, 2013

Levels:

Going to the Party: 1-3 books
Dancing All Night: 4-7 books
Greeting the Sunrise: 8-10 books
“Wild Card”: Since I'm the “Archduchess of Audio,” I have the power to grant you two “Wild Card”* options. Replace any two categories below with whatever you like, as long as you listen to it on audio.

CATEGORIES: Ten Things That Are On My Mind.
Latest Kick...Wrapped Up in Mysteries: I’ve been reading more mysteries lately.
Choose a book from this genre. Or, if you read the dead tree version, wrap up several
books in the same paper (making them all look exactly alike), shuffle them, and then
a week later pick one to read.
Blue: My favorite color is blue. Read a book with a cover that is predominately blue.
   Check out listopia !
“V” is for...: I’ve gone vegan! It has been a whole year now. Wow. It might be
hard to find a book with a character who has chosen a plant-based lifestyle,
so read a book with a “V” in the title, or by an author with a first or last name that
   starts with “V.”
This Kitchen is Green Powered: Since green is the official color of vegans,
and I love to cook, read a book with a cover that is predominately green. Or where
the main character is a chef.
Love That Dress!: I started a shelf entitled love-that-dress. Not much on it, yet,
so help me add to it by reading a book that shows a beautiful dress.
Animals: I’m an animal lover. Read a book with one on the cover.
(It does NOT have to be a book about that animal.)
Beach, Mountains, Desert: I really need to sell my house and move to something
smaller. But where to retire? The beach, the mountains, the desert? Help me by picking
a book depicting any one of these locals.
Do You Know Jack?: My favorite hero is Jack Travis in Smooth Talking Stranger,
by Lisa Kleypas. Read a book with a character named Jack in it. Or one written by a Jack.
Challenge Book: I love challenges on GRs, making them and participating in them.
Read a book that is the first one for a new challenge, or helps you finish off one.
One More Time: I love to reread my favorite books, often by audio. Revisit one of
your favorites. Or try a book via this media delivery system.

My Gift to You: I’m giving each of you, whether or not you join this challenge, an Extension "Gift Card" for NBRC Challenges. You may use it on this challenge, or any other NBRC challenge you are working on, extending it by one month. This includes monthly, seasonal, yearly, even a “You Set the Pace” one that you underestimated your time.

Ten Book Author Train Challenge Start

Ten Book Author Train Challenge hosted by Nothing But Reading Challenges.

For this challenge, you read a book, then for your second book the author's first name has to start with the same letter as the first book's author's last name.

Example

(title) by R F DelderfielD
(title) by David neviN (DelderfielD ends with d, so this author's first name starts with d also)
(title) by Nancy FairbankS (neviN ends with n, and Nancy starts with it.)

This one is kind of tricky to plan out because lots of writers' first names start with J but almost no last names end with it, etc. But it might be a good way to whittle the TBR list!

Another interesting challenge to take part in. This is not as easy as it looks.

My train of authors:
  1. Julie KagawA: The Iron Knight (finished August 13th)
  2. Alan GarneR: The Weirdstone of Brisingamen (finished September 4th)
  3. Raymond ChandleR: The Big Sleep (finished September 12th)
  4. Rick RiordaN: Percy Jackson and The Titan's Curse (finished September 16th)
  5. Nicholas SparkS: The Last Song (finished October 15th)
  6. Stephen VolKWhitstable (finished January 8th)
  7. Kim HarrisoN: The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (finished January 26th)
  8. Nalini SingHAngels' Blood (finished February 4th)
  9. Hannah HarringtoN: Speechless (finished February 28th)
  10. Neil Gaiman: The Graveyard Book (finished March 2nd)

High Summer Read-a-Thon July 22-28 Start

High Summer Read-a-Thon hosted by Michelle @ The True Book Addict.

It's time to sign up for the High Summer Read-a-Thon! I hope you will join me this month for the week of July 22. We will start on Monday, 7/22 at 12:00am CST and finish on Sunday, 7/28 at 11:59pm CST (adjust times according to your time zone). Read what you like during the week. I've decided it's not about quantity, but quality (although those who rock the quantity...I salute you!). So, if you have kids and want to read children's books, go for it! As always, this is a week long read-a-thon, but you can join in and read whenever it's convenient for you. It's all about being laid back and getting some reading done.

Michelle hosts 4 Read-a-Thons a year and this year it seems I might be able to take part in all 4.

I have quite a few books I have to get through this month for another challenge and I hope this Read-a-Thon will help me achieve my goal for that.

My goal for the High Summer Read-a-Thon will be 5 books.

My list of books:
  1. A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines
  2. Witch Way Bends by Olivia Hardin
  3. Family Magic by Patti Larsen
  4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Bout of Books 7.0 Read-a-Thon Goals and Sign Up

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon hosted by Bout of Books.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 7.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team.

I read about this Read-a-Thon  on The True Book Addict's Blog and as I like week long reading challenges I decided I had better take part.

I have a busy week ahead of me so I won't set my goal too high.

My goal will be to read four books this week. As usual for this kind of challenge my list of books is more than four so I have a choice.

My List:
  1. Just Doll by Janice Daugharty (234 pages)
  2. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, John Rocco (384 pages)
  3. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (353 pages)
  4. The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice (493 pages)
  5. A Rage in the Heavens by James A. Hillebrecht (287 pages)
  6. The Arrival by Nicole MacDonald (353 pages)
  7. The Rising by Kelley Armstrong (406 pages)

Dewey's Read-a-Thon 2013 Start

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
I am on holiday so this time I read from Denmark.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I think I am looking most forward to The Rising by Kelley Armstrong.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
I have so many but I think it will be the icecream.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2011 is what started my blog and me taking part in lots and lots of other reading challenges.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
The last Read-a-Thon I looked at a lot of other blogs and felt I missed out on a lot of reading time so more reading books this time and less time following everybody else.

Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon 2013 Start

Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon 2013 hosted by Michelle @ the true book addict.

It has started. Or rather it started at midnight between yesterday and today but as that is 3am my time I start now.

As usual I have made a list to read and some of the books on this list I need to read for other challenges as well.

My goal for this week's Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon is to read at least 7 books, of these I want 4 to be horror / scary books.

My reason to set the number of books a bit higher than my usual amount of books is that the end of this Read-a-Thon coincides with Dewey's Read-a-Thon which is a 24 hour Read-a-Thon.

My list of 8 horror / scary books which might or might not change along the week.
  1. The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
  2. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
  3. Killing Floor by Lee Child
  4. Marked by Kim Richardson
  5. The Hunt by Joseph Williams
  6. Hollowland by Amanda Hocking
  7. Manhattan Grimoire by Sandy DeLuca
  8. The Ritual by Adam Nevill
