Rawk: Travel Around the World - Finished

Travel Around the World hosted by Rawk-A-Tiers on Goodreads.

This was more difficult than I expected and it took me a while to find books set in all the continents.

Quarterly Challenge
October 1 - December 31, 2015

I personally do a lot of business travel by air...there are some airports I know by their aiport code (SAN = San Diego,CA; DFW=Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; LAX=Los Angeles, CA). But there are others I would have no clue about just by the code (HPN=Westchester County, NY, where I flew into recently!)

This challenge will have you use Airport Codes, matching with Author Initials, to take a trip around the world. Since Airport Codes are all 3 character codes, you may ignore one of the letters if needed to get the author's initials (can ignore any of the 3 letters, but the initials must be in order

Example
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling - Janakpur, Nepal (JKR)
Born in Fire - Nora Roberts - Nadar, Morocco (NDR) [ignoring the D]
Still Alice - Lisa Genova - Algiers, Algeria (ALG) [ignoring the A]
The Martian - Andy Weir - Ahwaz, Iran (AWZ) [ignoring the Z]

The Following is NOT acceptable
First Grave on the Right - Darynda Jones - Jodhpur, India (JDH) [Should be DJ, not JD]

You may only use an airport once, but you may end up using an author more than once based on using a different airport that has similar alpha codes.

☯NOTE:
for Antarctica, you may use the ICAO column to find your author

Scoring

☯ You have three months to complete your level for 10 points.
CR Level = 5 airports
RR Level = 10 airports
PR Level = 15 airports

☯ +1 bonus per airport if using all 3 airport/author initials (max of 5 bonus points)
(NOTE: For Antarctica airports, you may use 3 of 4 initials from list)

☯ +5 bonus if 7 books read, each from an airport on a different continent

☯ +1 bonus per book if book takes place on the same continent as airport is located (max 7 books/points; once per continent)

☯ +1 bonus - Tell us a story of the first plane trip you took (what were the aiport codes of the path you took?). If you have never been on a plane trip, have you taken a trip by other mass public transportation (train, boat, etc)? If you haven't taken a trip, where WOULD you go?!

☯ Maximum Points if all bonuses are met = 28 points

and back again and as far as I remember we had a flight from Isla Margarita back to Caracas to go home.

STRANGERS by Chirag Upadhyay

Have you ever been overseas and wondered who the strangers you meet at the hotel, at the bar, swimming pool, and on the nine hour bus journey through the night really are? Danny Shah didn't. He should have.
Made redundant, Danny decides a holiday, specifically a visit to Machu Picchu, is in order. He joins an organised tour where he meets his fellow travellers, eight other strangers. All Danny wants to do is party. However, some of these strangers harbour secrets…A fugitive on the run. An undercover cop in pursuit.
Will Danny get the chance to experience sun, sex, sours and once-in-a-lifetime sites? Or will he be dragged into a story he wants nothing to do with?
  From Goodreads.

This is one of the more confusing books I have read but I still kind of liked it. I chose it because it was set in Peru and the characters were going to visit Machu Picchu, which I visited many years ago. Unfortunately they never got there! I had no idea till the book told me at the end who was the bad guy and who was the undercover cop and I think that was really good.

Lost & Found in India by Braja Sorensen

Despite how entertaining or exotic one may find other books on India to be, they share the trait of being written by foreigners on a brief journey, an adventure, and consequently they all deliver an often incorrect view of a country that is impossible to understand from the surface.
Sorensen moved in, set up house, became a resident in a village on the banks of the Ganges River, and eventually called India home. Her writing swings from the depths of ancient culture, spirituality, and philosophy, through to drunk bathroom repair men and India's wedding season, and ties it all together with direction, grounding, and an easily-digested reality.
Its funny, outrageous, controversial, deep, witty, spiritual, philosophical, and damned entertaining: in other words, it’s India. From Goodreads.

I unfortunately didn't find this book funny, entertaining or interesting at all. The most interesting thing about the book is that I am Danish and she married a Dane and he is hardly mentioned. But I did finish it as I needed it for a challenge.

Deathly Still by Elizabeth A. Reeves

Antigone Baehr is almost eighteen when her life takes a bizarre turn. All those feelings she'd had her whole life that she was different from all of her peers were actually true-- she is something called 'unlife'.
Now forced to face Death face-to-face, Annie finds herself caught up in a future she never wanted for herself-- is she fated for Death?
Or to be Death?
From Goodreads.

I have read all the Cindy Eller and the Goldie Locke and the Were Bears books and this new series is a continuation in that world. This book is about Goldie Locke's daughter. As with all these books, this was a fun quick read. A bit different as it is about her training with Death to become either a reaper or the new Death. I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Mattie: The Story of an Australian Convict Child by Sheila Hunter

Mattie aged 12 is convicted for petty theft, given the sentence of 7 years and is sent to Australia. She meets another convict woman who at her death gives Mattie a chance for a new life. Mattie makes the most of everything that comes her way. She earns her freedom, falls in love, marries and becomes a mother. Life is not kind to her. She meets bushrangers; moves to the Gold Fields in Bathurst and starts a store.
Mattie is the kind of woman that made
Australia what it is today.
From Goodreads.

This only just made it up to 3 polar Bears. It was okay and it was the description of the time period that pulled it up. The main character Mattie is a bit too perfect and I didn't understand why the author had to bring the subject of paedophilia into the book and then just use a page on it and really no consequences for the person trying to do it.

Terra Incognita: Travels In Antarctica by Sara Wheeler

Sara Wheeler was the first woman selected by the American government to be the Writer in Residence at the US South Pole Station. She spent six weeks at the pole. In this book she reveals how people live on the bases and how the landscape affects them. From Goodreads.

This was only just okay. There were a lot of interesting historical bits and some funny episodes during her time in Antarctica. Unfortunately, it was also boring and felt quite drawn out.

Life's a Witch by Amanda M. Lee

Life's a witch ... and then you die.
Bay Winchester is living the witch part – literally. She’s hoping to avoid the dying part.
The Winchester world is full of trouble when great-aunt Willa and cousin Rosemary come to town. It’s clear they’re up to something, but no one can figure out what.
Aunt Tillie is loading for bear. She’s declared war on her sister, and she’s not taking prisoners – or looking to skirt collateral damage.
When a young man’s body shows up at Hollow Creek, Bay’s attention is divided thanks to a morose ghost who blames her for ending “party time” and Aunt Tillie’s refusal to back down.
FBI Agent Landon Michaels enjoys watching the show, although he’s worried the dead man’s ties to the local drug trade could put the Winchesters in danger due to Aunt Tillie’s “glaucoma medicine” side business.
Local kids are trying to steal from the property, Aunt Willa is trying to undermine everyone and Aunt Tillie has a secret that she’s dying to spill – that is when she’s not protecting her land with a shotgun.
Bay is determined to find answers, even if she dies in the process.
From Goodreads.

As usual a fun, quirky, cosy read about Bay and her family. This time Aunt Tillie's sister turns up and makes trouble, but of course Aunt Tillie sorts everything out in her special way. This also has a darker side with drug and sexual abuse and revenge in the mix that Bay has to sort out.

Prophecy of the Female Warrior by K.A. Young

Anna Wilkins is a prototypical housewife. She buys groceries, picks up the dry cleaning and hosts dinner parties. Everything was picture perfect from the outside looking in until the life she was born to live collided with the life she was living. Her husband is murdered by a creature from another realm, a creature that is only visible to her. Through her pain, his death awakens a part of her she didn't know existed. She is then thrust into a life of Vampires, Werewolves and Sexy Nephilim Warriors. Drawn to her by a bond as old as their race, a Nephilim Warrior finds Anna at her darkest hour and seeks to arouse what lies dormant within her. The scorching sexual attraction she and the Warrior feel for one another may be beyond anything either of them can control... From Goodreads.

The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland

Logan Wilde is accidentally drawn into the mysterious, dangerous world of the Menagerie when he discovers a griffin hiding under his bed . . . and it leads him straight to the weirdest girl in seventh grade, Zoe Kahn.
Zoe is panicking. Her family has been guarding the Menagerie for centuries. If they don't get the cubs back fast, the whole place will be shut down. To save the griffins' lives, she's willing to break all the rules, even if it means letting an outsider like Logan help. But the real mystery remains: Is someone trying to sabotage the Menagerie?
From Goodreads.

This was a fun book full of mythical beings. I think it was a good book for the age group it has been written for. I borrowed it from the library but as of this time it doesn't seem like the library has the next book in the series but I will keep an eye on it.

A man called Ove by Fredrik Backman

In this bestselling and delightfully quirky debut novel from Sweden, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.
From Goodreads.

This book is far away from my usual fantasy genre but it was very good. During this book I felt annoyed with Ove at times and also sad for him but it also made me both giggle, laugh and cry. The ending is sad but right. Definitely a book I can recommend.

I'll Be Watching You by Charles de Lint

Rachael Sorenson feared she would never escape her ex-husband's abuse. Then a passing stranger came to her rescue---a stranger who had watched her from afar.
He was a photographer, and Rachael was his perfect subject. He lived only to make her happy---and eliminate those who didn't.
Now he wants more than her beauty. She owes him her life---and he means to collect.
From Goodreads.

This was scary as I hate anything about stalking. It doesn't help that the book is seen both from the victim's and the perpetrator's POW. We follow them both and the further into the story the more scary it gets. To me it is the knowing that the bad thing is going to happen and anxiously waiting for it that is scary. It was not an enjoyable read but it scared me as it was meant to.

Poisoned by Elaine Macko

With Halloween fast approaching, Alex Harris, owner of the Always Prepared temporary agency, has her hands full keeping her assistant from turning the office into a house of horrors. But that’s nothing compared to finding the body of one of Indian Cove’s high society poisoned.
All eyes turn to septuagenarian Robert Brissart. But Alex doesn't believe it for a minute fearing that the old woman was the intended victim all along and that another attempt will be made to finish her off. Alex needs to find out which member of the town’s elite is the killer before they strike again.
There’s something sinister going on in Indian Cove and it’s not just Halloween hi-jinks. The mystery comes to a frightening finale amid the jack-o-lanterns and ghosts on Halloween night when Alex discovers that there are more than just witches and goblins trick-or-treating in her normally peaceful New England village.
From Goodreads.

This was an okay cosy mystery. Alex is nosy and starts questioning everybody in the family and is of course the main reason the case gets solved. I do like that it also shows that she has completely misunderstood some of the information she has gotten hold of as that makes it slightly more believable.

Don't Waste a Minute - A Story of Africa by Marilyn Randall

Meet Lyn, a girl from the Welsh valleys who sets out for adventure in 1970's Zambia with her very young daughter and husband. What will happen on the way and when she gets there exceeds all her imaginings. All the content of this book is true with the exception of a few names and small insignificant details. Enjoy xxx. From Goodreads.

This was okay but no more. Lyn was one minute scared of everything around her, the next she would stand up to official people in a very stupid way. Also when she becomes involved with the animal shelter she takes weird chances. During the whole book she seems to be handling herself in this erratic manner. The reason to be in Zambia was her husband's work and what she did was all as a volunteer. He did not seem supportive of her and every time he wanted to do something it seemed that's what they did.
The only reason this book is 3 Polar Bears is that the stupid things Lyn was doing actually were humorous in between.
