Christopher thinks he
has his life under control until the mysterious Amaryllis arrives in the
little town, spreading chaos and confusion in her wake.
Suddenly he
isn't sure about anything any more. Will he learn to relax and go with
the flow or will he try desperately to remain in charge even in the face
of domestic upsets and strange things happening all around him?
This is the first in a series of gentle, quirky mysteries set in the small town of Pitkirtly in Scotland. From Goodreads.
It is a mystery set in a small village near Edinburgh in Scotland. There was a bit too much spy stuff for my liking. It is very slow moving, set around Christopher a member of PLIF –the Pitkirtly Local Improvement Forum, a group that does nothing at all but meet up in the local pub for a beer. Suddenly Amaryllis turns up and wants to change that, which doesn't go down too well with the group. On top of that there are a lot of mysterious people around turning up in odd places trying to get to Christopher. Not a series I am likely to continue with even if it is set in Scotland.

Fatal Boarding by E.R. Mason
I have never believed in
going strictly by the book. My six-foot-two frame has an assortment of
scars and marks that readily attest to that. It’s the main reason I’ve
never been offered a higher position on a big-draft. But, when things
really go to hell, I’m always the first one to get the call. They trust
me with their lives, but not their jobs.”
--Adrian Tarn, Chief Security Officer, Starship Electra. From Goodreads.
This was short but good. It is a while since I read any science fiction and it was fun to be back. A lot of people get killed by aliens in this but it is fun to follow Adrian Tarn and see how he gets things done by not following the rules. I actually think I might read more of this series.

Vacations from Hell by Libba Bray
In this must-have collection, five of today's hottest writers—Libba Bray (A Great and Terrible Beauty), Cassandra Clare (City of Bones), Claudia Gray (Evernight), Maureen Johnson (13 Little Blue Envelopes), and Sarah Mlynowski (Bras & Broomsticks)—tell supernatural tales of vacations gone awry. Lost luggage is only mildly unpleasant compared to bunking with a witch who holds a grudge. And a sunburn might be embarrassing and painful, but it doesn't last as long as a curse. Of course, even in the most hellish of situations, love can thrive. . . .
From light and funny to dark and creepy, these stories have something for everyone. You definitely won't want to leave this collection at home! From Goodreads.
I do quite like collections of short stories, unfortunately this wasn't as good as I hoped. I liked 3 of the 5 stories and that was all. Glad I borrowed it from the library and didn't buy it.

The Cypher by Julian Rosado-Machain
The other is the story of Thomas Byrne, a young man thrust into secrets he shouldn’t be aware of and dangers he shouldn’t face but, that he ultimately will, for he is a Cypher. The only one who can steer humanity’s future.
The ultimate conspiracy theory is that Magic is real. Kept in check by technology but, every five hundred years the balance can shift and, if it does, technology will fail and those creatures we’ve driven into myth will come back with a vengeance.
To protect the present, Guardians Incorporated needs to know the future. From Goodreads.
This was better than I expected. It is a Young Adult book as the main character is only 15-16 years old. What I liked about Thomas was that he wasn't as such a recluse as is often seen but as he has just changed school he didn't have any friends either. The relationship between Thomas and his grandfather is very strong as he has lived with him since his parents disappeared. It is full of mythical and magical creatures. It is a bit similar to "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" by Michael Scott.

Forever Charmed by Rose Pressey
When Halloween inherits her great-aunt’s manor, she decides to put the house to good use as a bed-and-breakfast. Her first guest is the sinfully good-looking Nicolas Marco, but he’s not here for the continental breakfast. Halloween discovers a ratty old book in the attic. It’s written in an unfamiliar language, and unknown to her, the tome is cursed.
Halloween soon learns there’s a link between the book and her newfound talent as a necromancer. But her new skills come with a catch: the reanimated dead aren’t as cupcake-sweet as they were when they were alive. When a rival witch comes after the book, Halloween doesn’t know who to trust–the sexy vampire who says he wants to save the day, or the warlock who says he can destroy the book once and for all.
Halloween had better learn fast. Because when the dead start rising, only a powerful witch can put them back under. From Goodreads.
This was okay but no more. Halloween is not a very good witch till she inherits a house from her aunt and finds a special spellbook and suddenly she is incredible. Two gorgeous men turn up, they both say the want to help her but neither of them is telling her everything. I will only continue this series if I can find the next book for free.

Into Your Arms by Abigail Strom
Sara Minetti isn't
looking for love. As a professional ballet dancer, she won't let
anything get in the way of her demanding career. So when a sexy stranger
moves into the apartment next door, she's sure she can ignore the
sizzling chemistry between them.
Nick Landry is busy with a tough political campaign and a brother who needs his help. He's only in New York for a few months, and romance is the last thing he's looking for. But he can't stop thinking about the beautiful dancer next door...or the day he caught her in her underwear.
Nick and Sara are fighting a losing battle against an attraction they can't deny. The only question is, will they lose their hearts, too? From Goodreads.
I really liked this romance. Sara and Nick are both very driven within their fields, maybe too much. They both have baggage and issues all the way back to their childhood to deal with but of course everything works out. I really like Emilio, Sara's dance partner and very good friend, who supported her through the whole book.

The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson
Shai is a Forger, a
foreigner who can flawlessly copy and re-create any item by rewriting
its history with skillful magic. Though condemned to death after trying
to steal the emperor's sceptre, she is given one opportunity to save
herself. Despite the fact that her skill as a Forger is considered an
abomination by her captors, Shai will attempt to create a new soul for
the emperor, who is almost dead from the attack of assassins.
Skillfully deducing the machinations of her captors, Shai needs a perfect plan to escape. The fate of the empire lies in one impossible task. Is it possible to create a forgery of a soul so convincing that it is better than the soul itself? From Goodreads.
This is quite short, only 128 pages but a lot happens in that time. The idea of soulstamps is new and interesting. It means to change something to what it was or can be but it is not easy as it is not possible to change something from what it is to something completely different. Shai is a brilliant forger, as it is called, but even for her the task she has been set is almost impossible. This is all happening at the Emperor's court so there is a lot of political intrigue going on but luckily not too much.

The Brands Who Came For Christmas by Maggie Shayne
When he learns the truth, Caleb rushes back to Big Falls, determined to make it right despite what the scandal will do to his high profile career–the family legacy he had never truly wanted.
All he wants is Maya, and their child.
But can a girl whose father abandoned and betrayed her, ever truly believe in the goodness of a man who left town the morning after their one night stand? How can he convince her that he hasn’t stopped thinking about her since then, much less, do so with the whole world watching? He has to prove himself to a woman he’s not even sure he’s worthy of. But he has no idea how. From Goodreads.
This was okay. I like it when books have strong women and Maya, her mother and her sisters are exactly that. It is a romance and it ends happily. It could be fun to read some of the other books in this series as I guess they are about Maya's sisters.

Starry Night by Debbie Macomber
'Tis the season for love and second chances ...
Carrie Slayton, a big-city society-page columnist, longs to write more serious news stories. So her editor hands her a challenge first: Carrie must score the paper an interview with Finn Dalton, the notoriously reclusive author.
Living in Alaskan wilderness, Finn has written a bestselling book about surviving in the wild. But he stubbornly declines to speak to anyone, and no one even knows exactly where he lives. With her career at stake, Carrie sacrifices her family celebrations and flies out to snowy Alaska. When she finally finds Finn, she discovers a man both more charismatic and more stubborn than she expected. And soon Carrie is torn between pursuing the story of a lifetime and following her heart. From Goodreads.
This was okay. It was a cosy Christmas romance. Carrie needs to interview Finn, a reclusive author, in order to be allowed to move from the society pages to the more serious stuff. I liked that some of it takes place in a remote place in Alaska.

Unicorn Bait by S.A. Hunter
When Naomi discovers a unicorn horn in her late grandfather's belongings, she doesn’t actually believe it’s real, but her grandfather had meant for her to have it, so she takes it home. While cleaning it, she accidentally pricks herself on the horn's point and is magically transported to another planet that is filled with strange and dangerous creatures. The most dangerous being her brand new husband—Lord Tavik. Naomi doesn't know much about her brand new husband, not even what he looks like, and he assures her that if she tries to sneak a peek at his face, he'll kill her.
Needless to say, Naomi desperately wants to go home, but that poses a problem because the only way she knows how is by unicorn horn, and the one she had, stayed on Earth. Her best hope is a crazy witch named Agatha, but Agatha is the one who tricked her into marrying Tavik. And then RAN OFF. Naomi must find a way to ditch her husband, find the witch, and get a unicorn to send her back home. It shouldn't be that hard to find a virgin, right? From Goodreads.
This started a bit slow but luckily it picked up and got quite interesting. Not everything is as it seems in this book and I especially liked the twist with the virgin even though it is not the first time it has been used.

A Christmas Charade by Karla Hocker
Stenton wouldn't even recognize her. But once she looked up into his dark, piercing eyes, she knew this was a man who forgot very little and forgave even less. Well, she was no longer a blushing schoolgirl, and the dashing duke would soon find that a broken heart, once mended, could be formidable, indeed!
Clive Rowland, Fifth Duke of Stenton, was in no mood for a holiday gathering. But the Christmas gala would provide the perfect cover as he investigated reports that French agents were doing a brisk trade in stolen documents along the Sussex coast. It would be devilishly difficult to play the host while tracking down traitors, but Clive was up to the task—provided he kept his wits about him and didn't get distracted by yule logs and Christmas folderol… or the delightful charms of the disturbingly familiar Elizabeth. She was hiding something, to be sure, and Clive liked nothing better than unveiling a lady's secrets! From Goodreads.
This was an okay Christmas romance but there is a lot going on. We have got Elizabeth and Clive getting to know each other and Juliette and Stewart who are trying to make their marriage work. Then there are smugglers and French agents, and a treasure hunt.
What I liked best was Annie the ghost who even though she is a ghost actually is able to interact with quite a few of the characters.

Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher
Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, young Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, his world will change. Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave. But Amara is actually a spy, seeking intelligence on possible Marat traitors to the Crown. And when the Valley erupts into chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi invaluable. His talents will outweigh any fury-born power - and could even turn the tides of war. From Goodreads.
I enjoyed this fantasy by Jim Butcher, not quite as much as Dresden Files but still a lot. There is lots of magic in this both used for good and bad as is right in a fantasy book. Everybody apart from the main character is able to do some kind of magic. Luckily he is smart and brought up to think logically about things so he is good at finding solutions to tasks and to observe what happens around him. This doesn't end as such in a cliffhanger but there is clearly unanswered questions and more plots to kill the First Lord. I will continue this series.

Murder Most Witchy by Emily Rylands
When she chose books over boogeymen and libraries over lycans, Wendy thought she would finally be able to live a 'normal' life. Now, her library is no longer the sanctuary she imagined it to be, and there may just be a killer hiding in the stacks.
Murder Most Witchy is the first in a new series of paranormal mysteries by Emily Rylands. Intriguing and humorous, it will keep you guessing until the very end. From Goodreads.
I enjoyed this book. Wendy is a witch who doesn't want to use her magic and she works in a library - kind of hiding. When murders start happening in the library / museum where she works and it is clear magic is involved she can't help but be part of the investigation. The mystery isn't hard to guess but it is interesting why the person does the killing. There are a couple of guys who are interested in Wendy, I have to continue this series to find out who she chooses.

Head Over Halo by Molly Snow
Teen angel, Persephone,
is the only one in all of Heaven who can't sing. In fact, her name
literally means "Voice of Destruction." So diving down one of Heaven's
portals, straight into singer Taylor Hamilton's bedroom, seems like a
good idea at the time. Maybe, just maybe, he can help. Plus, he is sooo
cute!
While it can be fun swooning over a mortal, it can also be frustrating. Angels aren't supposed to fall for mortals. Then there's Taylor's guardian angel, who is ready to sabotage the budding romance at every turn. Will Persephone learn to sing before Heaven calls her back? And, most importantly, can love prevail for an angel who has fallen head over halo for a mortal? From Goodreads.
This was a cute, sweet, light romance. Persephone is the only angel who can't sing so without permission she dives to earth hoping the human Taylor can help her. Her friend Saffron tries to stop her but is pulled along instead. Theo Taylor's guardian angel is not very happy with them just turning up. If you dislike overly sweet romance, don't read this book.

Enchanted Secrets by Kristen Middleton
A modern day tale of romance, mystery, and witches.
When shy, eighteen-year-old Kendra meets the new guy at school, Tyler, she can't help but be drawn to his irresistible charms. Later, she agrees to visit his family's new shop, Secrets, and is drawn into a world that takes her breath away. Unfortunately, where magic reigns, so does danger, and she is forced into an adventure that leaves her racing against the clock to stop an evil curse. From Goodreads.
This was a book with humour and mystery. Being an identical twin myself with a mother who is also an identical twin makes it fun to read as that is what the main character is. Though I haven't discovered my own magical abilities yet. I also like that there is a twist that I hadn't seen coming.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”
So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?
Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own. From Goodreads.
This was okay. It was a fun idea about a scavenger hunt between strangers starting in a bookshop.
I liked Lily okay but not Dash so much, it seems he is nice to his friends but he can be rather rude to other people. I liked Boomer and especially Great-aunt Ida who seemed to be quite a character. It was cute and funny in between but just didn't draw me in.

Any Witch Way You Can by Amanda M. Lee
This was a fun read. A paranormal cosy mystery. Well, there are ghosts and a few harmless curses that's all of the paranormal and the mystery more or less solves it self.
Bay and her cousins Thistle and Clove are as close as sisters and are bickering as much or more than any sisters do. The character I really liked is aunt Tillie who is the matriarch of the family and though she seems like she is crazy she hasn't quite lost it, she just likes to pretend.

A Season of Angels by Debbie Macomber
Wishes for love bring hope from above.
Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy—three willing but sometimes wayward angels—are each given someone's prayer to answer . . .
Goodness: She knows Monica Fischer longs for a husband and home of her own, but the young woman has practically given up on finding the right man to stand by her side . . . until Goodness steps in to help.
Mercy: Can Mercy bring hope back into Leah Lundberg's life? This maternity nurse desperately wants a child to fill up the home she's made with her husband, Andrew.
But there's just one catch: Each angel must teach her charge a memorable lesson before the prayer can be granted . . . From Goodreads.
This was okay. A cosy, easy read about 3 angels who are sent to earth to help 3 humans get their wish. Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are cute angels especially because they don't always behave as they should. Not all 3 humans who need help are interesting, I liked Monica Fisher's story best.

Christmas in Hawaii! How lucky can a girl get? Except Leilani is bringing her mother’s ashes home to Waikiki and has an urgent plea of help from an aunt she’s never even met. After winning two free nights in prestigious Hotel Jordan, things take a turn she never expected. First, she is stuck in an elevator with the prickly, but luscious Mr. Jordan. Secondly, her aunt is a sick woman and only held on for one reason. She wants to pass on her most precious possession… her five-year-old grandchild. The same prickly little fellow that takes one look at Leilani, slaps his fist on his hips and yells, “Go away!”
Kale is the owner of the Jordan Hotel Chain and he can’t believe his rotten luck. He broke up with a spoilt brat of a girlfriend and now he’s stuck in an elevator with a big-eyed, effusive tourist. How in the world can a guy who’s so worldly be hooked on a lively beauty with more dilemmas than anyone he’s ever met? From Goodreads.
I really liked Leilana even though she seems a bit too good sometimes. She didn't know she had any family after her mother's death and suddenly she is in charge of Mano her 5 year old cousin and of course in love. Then there is the loveable elderly taxi-driver Pi who helps her from the moment she arrives in Hawaii. It was a cosy, heart warming story. Perfect Christmas holiday read.
