The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy - after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera - it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon figurehead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace.
And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket, Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving command: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find - and close - the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?
Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader - but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side
.
From Goodreads.

Rick Riordan continues to write books that I just can't put down. There have been a couple of nights that I have been very tired and decided to go to bed and read for just 5 minutes. Hours later I am still reading. There is a lot going on in this book: romance, battling giants and gods, and also trying to find out why friends act like the enemy in between. This book ends in a cliffhanger, I am glad I have the next one coming from the library soon.

UnStrung by Neal Shusterman

How did Lev Calder move from an unwillingly escaped Tithe to a clapper? In this new ebook original short story, author Neal Shusterman opens a window on Lev's adventures between the time he left CyFi and when he showed up at the Graveyard.Lev's experiences on a Hi-Rez, an extraordinarily wealthy Native American Reservation introduce him to a teen with remarkable musical talent... and whose gifts are destined to end up in the hands of another. And it is this teen's heart-breaking story that inspired Lev to choose the clapper's path.
Pulling elements from Neal Shusterman's critically acclaimed Unwind and giving hints about what is to come in the long-awaited sequel, UnWholly, this short story is a must for fans of the series.
From Goodreads

This is definitely not as good as the first book in the series but it does explain a few things about Lev. I actually found this short story rather sad as I really like one of the characters and things don't turn out good for him. I am hoping we will hear more about him in the next books.

The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

Percy is confused. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn't know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn't ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth
Hazel is supposed to be dead. When she lived before, she didn't do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem — when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her "gift" for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn't say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wished she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.
Frank is a klutz. His grandmother says he is descended from heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn't see it. He doesn't even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery — although not good enough to win camp war games. His bulky physique makes him feel like an ox, especially infront of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely — enough to share the secret he holds close to his heart.
Beginning at the "other" camp for half-bloods and extending as far as the land beyond the gods, this breathtaking second installment of the Heroes of Olympus series introduces new demigods, revives fearsome monsters, and features other remarkable creatures, all destined to play a part in the Prophesy of Seven.
From Goodreads.

Another really good page-turner from Rick Riodan. As the first book in this series wasn't about Percy, this had to be.
I like meeting new characters and I am looking forward to the next book which I have ordered from my library.

Groovy Greeks by Terry Deary, Martin Brown

Apparently the Greeks (we are talking about the Ancient variety) were a rather groovy bunch. The boys didn't start school until they were seven and girls didn't have to go at all. Greek children invented all manner of cool games just for something to do, and the grown-ups invented the Olympic Games and made the men run naked.
As Terry Deary points out, though, in his Horrible Histories: Groovy Greeks, things were not always quite as jolly and some of the more disturbing facts unearthed in this funny and clever alternative to the history book are actually quite, well, horrible. From Goodreads.

The only reason I read this short story is that it was in the same book as Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades. This Groovy Greeks story is meant as a history lesson for very small kids.

Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades by Rick Riordan

The goddess Persephone has summoned Percy, Thalia and Nico to the Underworld in order to retrieve Hades' powerful sword before it falls into the wrong hands. Easier said than done in a world full of evil daimons, ghosts and ghouls. Not to mention Iapetos - brother of the powerful Titan lord, Kronos. This time the young demigods are really up against it - will Percy manage to return the sword before it's too late? From Goodreads.

This short story was not as good as Rick Riordan's other books but it was still good. A fun little read that is part of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

How (Not) to Kiss a Ghost by Elizabeth A. Reeves

Cindy's life is just starting to quiet down. She has her Timothy back and her bakeries are doing well. Life couldn't be better until strange things start to happen.
Timothy's mother, who has been dead for sixteen years, comes to visit and Cindy's sisters are disappearing. As Cindy and Timothy start to investigate, they discover her sisters' lifeless bodies. Is it the kiss of death?
Cindy must find the demon behind these kidnappings before she loses her whole family.
From Goodreads.

This is the fourth book in the Cindy Eller series. I still like the series and find it both cosy and humorous. But it annoys me that the author is writing shorter and shorter books. The first book in the series was 315 pages, the third was 208 and now we are down to 184 pages in this book. I hope this doesn't continue.

How (Not) to Kiss a Beast by Elizabeth A. Reeves

Cindy's Ordinary boyfriend is missing and nobody seems to know where he has gone. Cindy is convinced that something horrible has happened to him, but every attempt she has made to find him--Magical or otherwise--has offered no explanation.

How can she fight against powers she doesn't even understand--especially when her own Magic is acting up worse than ever before?
And what will she do when enemies of her father start coming out of the woodwork?

Wyrd Girl by Jon Jacks

She’s in an Otherworld
I’m the weird girl.
You know; the one every kid in class avoids, just in case what I’ve got is catching.
Not that I care.
See, there are worlds other than this one.
Worlds we pass on to when we die.
Worlds, even, where we exist before we’re even born.
They’re the worlds of the Nyxt.
And, if I don’t handle things right, they’re about to declare war on the living.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Aria is a teenager in the enclosed city of Reverie. Like all Dwellers, she spends her time with friends in virtual environments, called Realms, accessed through an eyepiece called a Smarteye. Aria enjoys the Realms and the easy life in Reverie. When she is forced out of the pod for a crime she did not commit, she believes her death is imminent. The outside world is known as The Death Shop, with danger in every direction.
As an Outsider, Perry has always known hunger, vicious predators, and violent energy storms from the swirling electrified atmosphere called the Aether. A bit of an outcast even among his hunting tribe, Perry withstands these daily tests with his exceptional abilities, as he is gifted with powerful senses that enable him to scent danger, food and even human emotions.
They come together reluctantly, for Aria must depend on Perry, whom she considers a barbarian, to help her get back to Reverie, while Perry needs Aria to help unravel the mystery of his beloved nephew’s abduction by the Dwellers. Together they embark on a journey challenged as much by their prejudices as by encounters with cannibals and wolves. But to their surprise, Aria and Perry forge an unlikely love - one that will forever change the fate of all who live UNDER THE NEVER SKY
. From Goodreads

This was okay. Set in the future with the usual factions of the lucky ones in some kind of cover and the unlucky battling the elements and each other outside. Aria is thrown out, meets Perry and they have to work together. There were a  few surprises in this one and I might continue this series at a later date.

Good Husband Material by Trisha Ashley

Another warm, wise and witty offering from Sunday Times bestseller Trisha Ashley.
James is everything Tish has ever wanted in a husband – she’s married a man who even her mother approves of. He’s handsome, dependable, and will make an excellent father – unlike Tish’s first love, the disreputable Fergal. Her teenage sweetheart abandoned her for a music career and now lives a typical celebrity lifestyle. Fergal broke her heart – James helped mend it.
Now, they’ve bought a cottage in the country. The next step – kids and a lifetime of domestic bliss. Well, that’s the plan. And even if James has a slight tendency to view the village pub as a second home, their relationship is still in pretty good shape after seven years of marriage. So why is marriage to Mr Right making her long for Mr Wrong?

XBestia by Melissa Conway

Twenty years into the future, bioengineered animals provide organs for human transplantation. Grafts of animal skin have replaced tattoos in popularity, which gives rise to a unique new demographic: xenofreaks. Bryn Vega’s father is head of the Pure Human Society and when she’s kidnapped by the Bestia Butcher, the most notorious of the criminal xenosurgeons, she assumes it's payback for her father’s anti-xeno activities. Scott Harding is her taciturn jailer-called Cougar because of the claws replacing his fingers-but Scott is not who he seems. Deep under cover for the Xenofreak Intelligence Agency, he’s been given unprecedented immunity to find the Bestia Butcher’s lair and do whatever it takes to bring him to justice. When Bryn is forced to undergo a radical xenoalteration, she discovers a terrible secret: her father is using The Pure Human Society as a front for his own purposes. His willingness to sacrifice his daughter to accomplish them sends her running to Scott for protection, and into the hard-core underground subculture of the very xenofreak society she once despised. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

Seventeen year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller’s life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father… until her mother decides it would be in everyone’s best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie’s father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story about love in its myriad forms – first love, the love between parents and children – that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that deeply felt relationships can break our hearts… and heal them. Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2013 - Finished

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2013.

I reached my goals as I read the amount of books I wanted and I actually managed most of the 24 hours apart from nodding of a couple of times.
  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? I think around hour 14 and the last few hours have been tough to get through.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? If you are into fantasy and mythology then the Percy Jackson series is very good.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? No, you have done it very well this year.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I liked the preRaT posts.
  5. How many books did you read? 6 but 3 were quite short.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, To Love a Witch by Debora Geary, An Imperfect Witch by Debora Geary, WitchLove by Emma Mills,  Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, When We Were Very Young by A.A. Milne
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan and An Imperfect Witch by Debora Geary
  8. Which did you enjoy least? Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? N/A
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? This was my fifth Read-a-Thon and I am sure I want to take part again. I will be a reader.

When We Were Very Young by A.A. Milne

In all likelihood, your mother or father read you these poems and remember their parents reading the same. This collection of poetry by the creator of Winnie the Pooh was first published in 1924. With its companion volume Now We Are Six, the little books became two of the biggest bestsellers in publishing history. Children all over the world have heard about changing the guard at Buckingham Palace; James James Morrison Morrison Weather by George Dupree; the three little foxes who kept their handkerchiefs in cardboard boxes; and, of course, Christopher Robin, named for A.A. Milne's son. Adults and older children will enjoy Milne's poems too, as some of his humor is subtly directed at a more sophisticated audience. But younger children are the ones who love the naughty Mary Jane (lovely rice pudding again?) and the bears on the corners of London's streets. Read these poems aloud and pass along (or start) a family tradition. (Ages 5 to 9) From Goodreads.

I needed to read poetry for a challenge, I am not interested in poetry. This is why I chose this Winnie The Pooh poetry and it was cute, as I had hoped.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller

Hailed as a comics masterpiece, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is Frank Miller's (300 and SIN CITY) reinvention of the legend of Batman. It remains an undisputed classic, one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, and is a book cited by the filmmakers as an inspiration for the most recent Batman movies.
It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2013.

My computer has taken pity on me and is working again - for how long I don't know!

I have now finished WitchLove by Emma Mills. Next I will read 3 short things - Winnie The Pooh poetry, Batman graphic novel and Matchmakers 2.0

I haven't as such slept but I have to admit I have been dozing a couple of times, not enough to drop my book but enough to have my head nodding.

I wanted to update halfway through but I have had problems with my computer recently and they got worse now. I can't even copy a picture and save it on the computer. Well never mind, I will try updating from my Ipad.

Halfway through I had finished around 730 pages, I hope to read at least another 500.

An Imperfect Witch by Debora Geary

The tattoos on your heart matter more than the ones on your skin.
Two years ago, Lizard Monroe was Berkeley's newest delinquent on parole. Now she's a hot young realtor with a great life, an awesome guy, and enough friends to chase away the ghosts of her past.
Almost.
The crystal ball has spoken - life isn't done messing with her yet. And neither is the need brewing in the eyes of the man she loves.
The eve of Halloween approaches. And whatever the sexy poet realtor wants to believe, moving beyond your past isn't the same as facing the future.
This is the first book in my new Witch Central series, featuring my well-loved clan of modern witches and those who love them. Light contemporary fantasy with a good dose of humor, a little romance, and characters you won't want to leave.

Debora Geary is my favourite author at the moment. What is not to like. The book is about witches, it has romance, humour and a bit of sadness in it. Life is not perfect, neither are we but that doesn't mean life is not good.

I have finished The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan 557 pages . It was very good and I might read the next book in the series at the end of the RaT.

To Love a Witch by Debora Geary

Jake thought he had a juvenile delinquent witch in need of rescue. Romy couldn't decide if he was a kidnapper, liar, or too good to be true.Throw in Tattoo Boy, sparking fingers, and a seven-year-old who can see the future, and you have all the makings for a romance. Really. Well, there's some really great linguine and a duet from West Side Story, too.

Quite a short book. Exactly what is needed for Dewey's Read-a-Thon to fit in between longer books. As usual, a cute witch story with a lot of humour.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for “bad kids.” What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?
Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.
Leo has a way with tools. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god.

This is the first book in The Heroes of Olympus series which is a sequel to the Percy Jackson series. It is really good and I already have the second book ready but unfortunately have to wait about a week before I read it. But I will get back to it. I like that we get introduced to some new characters.
