January 2014 Update

http://www.deviantart.com/
Time goes fast, already January has passed. I have read 18 books, 5456 pages in total. A good start to 2014.
I have joined way too many challenges, over 30! My goal for January was to add a read book to all my challenges and apart from Audio challenge I succeeded in this.

THIS is all my January posts which is a lot as it includes most of the sign up posts for my challenges.

List of books:
  1. An Unlikely Witch by Debora Geary
  2. A little Christmas Magic by Sylvie Kurtz
  3. Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews

An Apple for the Creature edited by Charlaine Harris, Toni L.P. Kelner

What could be scarier than the first day of school? How about a crash course in the paranormal from Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner, editors of Home Improvement: Undead Edition? Your worst school nightmares—taking that math test you never studied for, finding yourself naked in school assembly, not knowing which door to enter—will pale in comparison to these thirteen original stories that take academic anxiety to whole new realms. From Goodreads.

I read this anthology because I wanted to read  Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews. But I was pleasantly surprised as I liked all the stories in this anthology. The Sookie Stackhouse story makes me want to get back to that series though it is so long ago I read the three first ones so I might have to reread them before continuing the series. And I will have to look into a few of the other authors from this book as well.

A Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her -- not necessarily in that order.
Now a mortal lover who abandoned Rachel has returned, haunted by his secret past. And there are those who covet what Nick possesses -- savage beasts willing to destroy the Hollows and everyone in it if necessary.
Forced to keep a low profile or eternally suffer the wrath of a vengeful demon, Rachel must nevertheless act quickly. For the pack is gathering for the first time in millennia to ravage and to rule. And suddenly more than Rachel's soul is at stake. From Goodreads.

Rachel leaves Cincinnati to go rescue Jax, a pixi and her human ex-boyfriend Nick. Nothing goes as planned. Another book I couldn't put down. I now have to wait a bit before reading the next as I have to get it from the library. It will be soon though.

Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison

There's no witch in Cincinnati tougher, sexier, or more screwed up than bounty hunter Rachel Morgan, who's already put her love life and soul in dire jeopardy through her determined efforts to bring criminal night creatures to justice.
Between "runs," she has her hands full fending off the attentions of her blood-drinking partner, keeping a deadly secret from her backup, and resisting a hot new vamp suitor.
Rachel must also take a stand in the war that's raging in the city's underworld, since she helped put away its former vampire kingpin - and made a deal with a powerful demon to do so that could cost her an eternity of pain, torment, and degradation.
And now her dark "master" is coming to collect his due.
From Goodreads.

Book 3 of the Hollows. This series is a very enjoyable read, there is something happening all the time and I just can't put the books down. Demons are as usual tricky to deal with, vampires are not much easier. Rachel is a brilliant protagonist and I am continuing this series right away.

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison

Rachel Morgan, sexy witch, independent bounty hunter, prowls the downtown Cincinnati for criminal creatures of the night. She can handle leather-clad vamps and a cunning demon or two. But a serial killer who feeds on the experts in the most dangerous kind of black magic is an ancient, implacable evil that threatens her very soul. From Goodreads.

Another series where I really liked the first book but just never got back to the series. I am glad I am back. Things just don't get easier for Rachel in this and a lot of things actually go badly. I read this book in a day starting at 3 in the afternoon and with a few breaks thrown in finished at 6.30 the next morning which for me makes it a very good read.

Crazy Challenge Connection Scrabble, anyone? Start

Scrabble, anyone? hosted by Goodreads Crazy Challenge Connection.

SCRABBLE, ANYONE?
Begins February 1, 2014
No deadline

Scrabble is one of my favorite games, but nobody in my family will play against me, so I figured out a way to turn the game into a reading challenge! With the help of a few online resources, I made a list of how frequently each letter appears in the game, then made sets of seven randomly generated letters. Be warned that, just like in the actual game, there are 4 times as many Os in the pool as there are Ms!

When you sign up for the challenge, I will assign you one of these randomly generated sets of letters. Your challenge is to read one book for each of those letters. You may use the
first letter of the first word of the book's title (do NOT count A, An or The), or the first or last initial of the author to complete each letter.
NOTE: Everyone's letter sets will be different, and assignments will be based on the order in which you sign up. The first person to sign up will get set #1, the second person will get set #2, and so on. Therefore, it will be up to you to keep track of the letters that have been assigned to you :)

For those who want more of a challenge, in addition to reading a book for each letter, make a word out of the letters you've been given, then read a book with that word in its title (or the author's name). It must be a single word, not a compound word. (Example: If you make the word KING, the word you must match is KING, not KINGLY or KINGDOM) This won't be possible with all letter sets, which is why it's a bonus and not part of the challenge itself :)

When you've completed your first set of letters, post a new message with the letters you were given and the books you read. If you'd like to continue the game, I'll give you another set of 7 letters and you can start all over again!

So ... who wants to play?

CHALLENGE RULES:
Please be sure to read these rules, as they are a bit different from the rules for most of our other challenges.

♦ If you want to participate in this challenge, simply sign up in the thread below. I will create a link to that post so you can update your progress as you complete each set of letters.

♦ Books must be at least 150 pages long, and may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged :) Re-reads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book and not simply skim through it.

For each book you read, please post a link to the title, and indicate the author and the date you finished reading it.
    * If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title or author, see the instructions here: Add a link to the book title and/or author

♦ If you use books that are in a language other than English, please translate those titles into English for the purposes of our challenges, unless you plan to use that language for the entire challenge. If you do use another language for the whole challenge, please remember that the translations of exempt words/phrases -- for example, A, An and The -- would be exempt as well.

♦ When you complete each set of letters, please post your list for that set of letters as a new message to make it easier for everyone to see what you’ve read :) You will not be assigned a new set of letters until you post your completed list from the previous set.

Another challenge to take part in, a kind of spell it out. A book for each letter + if possible to spell a word then a book with that word in its title.

The Rising by Kelley Armstrong

Things are getting desperate for Maya and her friends. Hunted by the powerful St. Clouds and now a rival Cabal as well, they're quickly running out of places to hide. And with the whole world thinking they died in a helicopter crash, it's not like they can just go to the authorities for help.
All they have is the name and number of someone who might be able to give them a few answers. Answers to why they're so valuable, and why their supernatural powers are getting more and more out of control.
But Maya is unprepared for the truths that await her. And now, like it or not, she'll have to face down some demons from her past if she ever hopes to move on with her life. Because Maya can't keep running forever.
Old secrets are revealed and unexpected characters make a surprising return in this stunning conclusion to Kelley Armstrong's New York Times bestselling Darkness Rising trilogy.
From Goodreads.

This is one of those books where I know I am going to like it as I have like the first two books in the series and the author is one of my favourite authors. I bought it in April 2013 and have had it down on lists for reading events several times but I just haven't gotten around to reading it!
Finally I have read it and just before starting I was nervous that since it is about 1½ years since I read the second, would I be able to remember the plot and characters? No problem at all.
I think Kelley Armstrong has written a brilliant end to this trilogy and knowing the Otherworld, where this is set, this was probably the best ending to expect.
Paranormal is my favourite genre and Kelley Armstrong is to me one of the best authors in this genre.

Crazy Challenge Connection Monopoly roll #1

Monopoly hosted by Crazy Challenge Connection on Goodreads.

Roll #1

BALTIC AVENUE: Read a book with a mostly purple cover OR a book whose title starts with B OR a book set in/near water (Baltic Sea) OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in “BALTICAVENUE”

Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews: I and A can be found in BALTICAVENUE.

Crazy Challenge Connection Monopoly Start

Monopoly hosted by Crazy Challenge Connection on Goodreads.

This just sounds like fun! My goal will be to read a book for each place on the board. This will probably take some time and quite a few trips round the board. That is 38 space as there is no books for "go to jail" and "visiting jail".

MONOPOLY
NO DEADLINE, TAKE AS LONG AS YOU NEED TO FINISH, OR PLAY AS LONG AS YOU’D LIKE TO PLAY

Start on Go. Go to www.random.org/dice, and roll one six-sided die. Move forward that number of spaces, and read a book that fulfills one of the options for that space. When you’ve finished the book, roll the die again and continue around the board until you finish the game. You cannot roll the die for your next move until you've completed reading for the space you're on. Be sure to count your spaces correctly! If you have to go backwards and land on a space you’ve already landed on, you must choose a different option than you did the first time around. When you go all the way around the board once, you can stop or you can go again for another round – or two or three : ) If you go around more than once, you may choose the same option you did in previous round(s), but of course, you’ll have to use a different book.

Every time you take a new “turn,” please post an update and a new message. Let us know what your die rolls are and what space you land on, then later come back and provide a link to the book you read for that space, how it fits the task, and the date you completed reading. If you used the book cover option, please provide a link to the book cover.

Example:
First turn: Rolled a 3, moved to Baltic Avenue.
Later, edited to add: Body Movers, by Stephanie Bond; title starts with B; finished 3/15

Next turn: Rolled a 4, landed on Chance #1.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
To sign up for this challenge, unlike our other challenges, all you have to do is post here and say “I want to play!” I’ll create a link for you to keep track of your progress around the board, but you do NOT need to repost all of the tasks. You may start the game as soon as you sign up for the challenge.

Any book format counts, as long as the book is at least 150 pages long. For e-books and audiobooks, check the number of pages Goodreads lists for the hardback copy of the book. Rereads are acceptable as long as you read the whole book and not simply skim it, and cross-challenge posting is encouraged. Ready … set … GO!
