Mini Challenge hosted by Wacky Reading Challenges on Goodreads.
This was a combination challenge and it was possible to do a task challenge and a spell out challenge or both. I tried to do both a few months but just couldn't manage so I ended up just choosing to do the task challenge.
This is spell/task challenge where you choose your level of participation: spell out, task, or a combination of both.
Challenge Rules:
Books
should be at least 125 pages. All formats are acceptable (hardback,
audio, ebook, etc). Re-reads are fine--just be sure to re-read the
entire book. Please Note: Unless otherwise specified within the
challenge rules, the following books are not allowed: manga, graphic
novels, comic books, childrens books. When updating your
challenge with books you've read, include the book title and author
links, and the date you finished reading the book.
September:
I will only do the spell out part of the challenge this month:
Choose a word or phrase to spell out using the first letter of a book
title or the first letter of the author's first or last name.

Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn... and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper... From Goodreads.
Another great series from Ilona Andrews. I was only a few chapters in when I suddenly realised that the Arbitrator George and his group of people are actually the very grown-up kids from The Edge, I loved this. I am already waiting impatiently for the next book in this series.

Steel's Edge by Ilona Andrews
Charlotte de Ney is as noble as they come, a blueblood straight out of the Weird. But even though she possesses rare magical healing abilities, her life has brought her nothing but pain. After her marriage crumbles, she flees to the Edge to build a new home for herself. Until Richard Mar is brought to her for treatment, and Charlotte’s life is turned upside down once again.
Richard is a swordsman without peer, future head of his large and rambunctious Edger clan—and he’s on a clandestine quest to wipe out slavers trafficking humans in the Weird. So when his presence leads his very dangerous enemies to Charlotte, she vows to help Richard destroy them. The slavers’ operation, however, goes deeper than Richard knows, and even working together, Charlotte and Richard may not survive... From Goodreads.
I liked how this book also placed the characters from the previous books in quite important roles at the same time as there is a new main couple. Charlotte and Richard are perfect heroes going after the slavers. The young boys, now teenagers, George and Jack are back and they learn something about their past.
The only thing is that the main enemy from the last three books, the Spider and the Hand, is fixed in about half a page. I think there should have been a bit more about that.

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb
Young Fitz, the
illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty
except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark
arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering
mission, and returns to the court where he is thrown headfirst into the
tumult of royal life. With the King near death, and Fitz's only ally
off on a seemingly hopeless quest, the throne itself is threatened.
Meanwhile, the treacherous Red Ship Raiders have renewed their attacks
on the Six Duchies, slaughtering the inhabitants of entire seaside
towns. In this time of great peril, it soon becomes clear that the fate
of the kingdom may rest in Fitz's hands--and his role in its salvation
may require the ultimate sacrifice. From Goodreads.I am completely caught up in this story. I'm not too fond of spy and political books but the difference here is that this is also fantasy and that makes it likeable. I like Fitz, he has no choice in how his life turns out. He has sworn loyalty to the king and has to do everything in his power to help him.
I will continue straight away with the last book in this trilogy.

I År bliver det anderledes (This Year It Will Be Different) by Maeve Binchy
From the New York Times
bestselling author of Circle of Friends, The Glass Lake, and Evening
Class comes a stunning collection of fifteen Christmas stories filled
with Maeve Binchy's trademark wit, charm, and sheer storytelling genius.
In A Typical Irish Christmas, a grieving widower heads for a holiday in
Ireland and finds an unexpected destination not just for himself, but
for a father and daughter in crisis. . . . In Pulling Together, a
teacher not yet out of her twenties sees her affair with a married man
at a turning point as Christmas Eve approaches. . . . And in the title
story, This Year It Will Be Different, a woman with a complacent husband
and grown children enters a season that will forever alter her life,
and theirs. . .
From Goodreads.
This was quite interesting, maybe not full of Christmas cheer but most of the stories contained some kind of reflection on life. I liked it even though I felt most of the stories involved cheating husbands, divorces and unhappy people.

Terra Incognita: Travels In Antarctica by Sara Wheeler
Sara Wheeler was the
first woman selected by the American government to be the Writer in
Residence at the US South Pole Station. She spent six weeks at the pole.
In this book she reveals how people live on the bases and how the
landscape affects them. From Goodreads.
This was only just okay. There were a lot of interesting historical bits and some funny episodes during her time in Antarctica. Unfortunately, it was also boring and felt quite drawn out.

Memory & Dream by Charles de Lint
Isabelle Copley, as the
young student of the cruel, brilliant artist Vincent Rushkin, discovered
that she could paint images so vividly real they brought her wildest
fantasies to life. But when the forces she unleashed brought tragedy to
those she loved, she turned her back on her talent and her dreams.
Now, twenty years later, Isabelle must come to terms with the shattering memories she has long denied and unlock the slumbering power of her brush. And, in a dark reckoning with her old master, she must find the courage to live out her dreams and bring the magic back to life.
This is a tale of love, courage, and the transforming power of imagination.
"The [Newford] books have all been written in such a way that you should be able to pick up any one and get a full and complete story. However, characters do reoccur, off center stage as it were, and their stories do follow a sequence." From Goodreads.
After having read a few Charles de Lint books I decided that I wanted to read the Newford books in order. Not that they can't be read on their own but there are characters that turn up in books more than once.
I listened to this on audio which was a problem for me, the narrator did well but it just took me too long to get through. If I had read this I would most likely have finished it in one or two sittings.
I really enjoy Charles de Lint's urban fantasies. They have quite a bit of magic just under the surface of normal life. Isabelle was a very complex person and she kept surprising me. I enjoyed going forward and backward in time.

Murder Half-Baked by Kathleen Delaney
A dead man in the
cemetery, another in the bakery. Ellen McKenzie has to find the killer
soon ... before another death puts a stop to her wedding. The groom is
Dan Dunham, Santa Louisa’s Chief of Police. The guest list is growing
and Ellen’s dreams of a small, intimate candlelight ceremony are rapidly
disappearing. A major distraction is Ellen’s quest to find a new
building for Grace House, a halfway house for needy women. Then she
finds old Dr Sadler dead in the cemetery, his head bashed in by the arm
of a marble angel. Every suspect is connected to Grace House. After it
goes up in flames, all the residents, including one new-born, move in
with Ellen and Dan. Will Ellen and Dan ever solve the murders and get
their lives back? From Goodreads.

Opening Hearts by Iona Findley
Jessalyn O'Donnell returns from her best friend's wedding with a surprise of her own. She knows how it happened -- three sex-filled nights with a smokin' hot guy, known only as Sam -- but she has no way to get in touch with him.
When smokejumper Sam Ricci returns to his hometown after the annual firefighting season ends, he has no plans for fatherhood. His lifestyle is too risky, and he loves his job -- almost as much as he loves women. Everything changes when he runs into Jessalyn again and discovers her plans for single parenthood.
Sam doesn’t want to be tied down. Jessalyn would rather go it alone than deal with an absent husband. So why, when a twist of fate brings them together again, does it feel so right? From Goodreads.
This was okay but no more. Though it was nice with a mature strong woman who could make decisions on her own.

Fate's Edge by Ilona Andrews
Audrey Callahan left
behind her life in the Edge, and she's determined to stay on the
straight and narrow. But when her brother gets into hot water, the
former thief takes on one last heist and finds herself matching wits
with a jack of all trades...
Kaldar Mar-a gambler, lawyer, thief, and spy-expects his latest assignment tracking down a stolen item to be a piece of cake, until Audrey shows up. But when the item falls into the hands of a lethal criminal, Kaldar realizes that in order to finish the job, he's going to need Audrey's help... From Goodreads.
I remember being slightly disappointed in book two because this series is not about the same main characters in each book, though the main character is a person we have met in a previous book. This has changed as I find it quite interesting to read about a person who was a minor character earlier. Kaldar Mar is the main character but Georgie and Jack, who we met in the first book, are also important and I like them. I am continuing this series and already have book 4 ready.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.
Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.
The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.
But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose. From Goodreads.
I enjoyed this very much and wished it was part of a series so I could return to this world. This was pure fantasy nearly without romance and it was quite refreshing. Nothing is like Agnieszka expects after she, surprisingly, has been chosen to serve The Dragon - the wizard, who protects her people.
I've had the first book in the Temeraire Series for years but not gotten around to reading it, I will definitely push it up my TBR list after reading this book by Naomi Novik.

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater
Now that the ley lines
around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and
Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply
into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking
life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the
same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after… from Goodreads.
This is a good continuation of The Raven Boys, and, although it centres around Ronan and his abilities, all the other characters are still a very important part of the story. I also like that one of the bad guys might turn good or at least not turn out to be as bad as expected. I have ordered the third book from the library.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Angelfield House stands
abandoned and forgotten. It was once the imposing home of the March
family--fascinating, manipulative Isabelle, Charlie her brutal and
dangerous brother, and the wild, untamed twins, Emmeline and Adeline.
But Angelfield House conceals a chilling secret whose impact still
resonates...
Now Margaret Lea is investigating Angelfield's past--and the mystery of the March family starts to unravel. What has Angelfield been hiding? What is its connection with the enigmatic author Vida Winter? And what is it in Margaret's own troubled past that causes her to fall so powerfully under Angelfilds spell? From Goodreads.
This was really interesting, more than I thought it would be. There were a few twists and turns that I just didn't see coming and that I love in a book. Well worth a read.

I Need a Hero by Emma Bennet
A lovely summer romance read that you won’t want to put down
Romance writer Bronte Huntington has vowed she will never settle for anything less than ‘the one.’ When pleasant red-haired dentist Ryan moves in next door he just doesn't fit the bill. They have plenty in common but Bronte wants nothing more than friendship with him.
Then it looks like Bronte’s dreams have finally come true when dashing Sebastian Fairfax rescues her on his horse after she has an accident in the countryside around her idyllic little cottage. Sebastian is tall, dark, handsome, and heir to a massive country estate!
But is Sebastian the one? Or will Bronte’s romantic dreams of the perfect hero turn out to be as fictional as her novels? And will Bronte's temperamental cat ever stop getting in the way?! From Goodreads.
This was okay but I like Ryan a lot more than Bronte. A cosy afternoon's read.

Christmas at Carol's by Nicola Yeager
Carol Gabriel hates Christmas. Not just a little bit, but quite a damn lot. She can’t even stand having a boyfriend over the Christmas period and habitually dumps them just before the season begins.
Even the restaurant she co-owns, a French bistro called Carol’s, doesn’t do a Christmas menu and it doesn’t do Christmas decoration, either.
But then she gets some bad news; the bistro is failing.
There’s too much local competition, they don’t have enough customers and there’s a risk that the business may have to sold.
For the sake of the restaurant, her glamorous business partner Roksana and all its much-loved employees, Carol takes on her mother’s advice and creates a Christmas menu for the first time.
She may even tart the place up with some decorations.
But it’s an uphill struggle. There’s a reason Carol doesn’t like Christmas and it’s one that she keeps to herself…
As time is running out Carol wonders if she’s left it too late.
Will her fabulous and charming employees be able to boost the restaurant's popularity?
Will there be Christmas at Carol’s? From Goodreads.
There was a couple of funny things happening in this book, but that is the best I can say. It used an enormous amount of French cooking expressions and names. It also keeps going on about how beautiful all the employees are. Not for me.

204 Rosewood Lane by Debbie Macomber
Olivia LockhartCedar Cove, Washington
Dear Reader,
If you've been to Cedar Cove before, you've probably met my friend Grace Sherman. You can usually find her at home she lives at 204 Rosewood Lane or at the public library, where she works. Like me, she grew up in this town and she's raised two daughters here. But did you hear that about six months ago, her husband disappeared? Just disappeared. Where's Dan? Why did he go? Who's he with? Will Grace ever find out?
Then there's Jack Griffin, our local newspaper editor, the man I've been seeing. And well, I have lots to tell you. Come on over and we'll talk!
Olivia. From Goodreads.
I have now read this second book in the Cedar Cove series and I really enjoyed it. There is a lot of different people to keep tabs on but I like that. This book is very much about Grace and her life which is quite sad. I am definitely going to continue this series.

The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland
Logan Wilde is
accidentally drawn into the mysterious, dangerous world of the Menagerie
when he discovers a griffin hiding under his bed . . . and it leads him
straight to the weirdest girl in seventh grade, Zoe Kahn.
Zoe is panicking. Her family has been guarding the Menagerie for centuries. If they don't get the cubs back fast, the whole place will be shut down. To save the griffins' lives, she's willing to break all the rules, even if it means letting an outsider like Logan help. But the real mystery remains: Is someone trying to sabotage the Menagerie? From Goodreads.
This was a fun book full of mythical beings. I think it was a good book for the age group it has been written for. I borrowed it from the library but as of this time it doesn't seem like the library has the next book in the series but I will keep an eye on it.

A man called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations. From Goodreads.
This book is far away from my usual fantasy genre but it was very good. During this book I felt annoyed with Ove at times and also sad for him but it also made me both giggle, laugh and cry. The ending is sad but right. Definitely a book I can recommend.

Carved in Stone by Donna McDonald
Jessica Daniels is mostly happy with her life. Her daughter is graduating college. She is a few years away from retirement. Life is good even though lately she has stopped being interested in both her art and men. Since Jessica has never been the kind of woman looking for that one special man to settle down with, she normally dates and enjoys all the men she wants. What's the harm with doing so suits her? Will is certainly good-looking and charming, but she's not sure he's worth the trouble of an exclusive relationship. She likes riding his motorcycle, seriously admires his art, and thinks he's mostly a great guy. But after thirty years of being single, Jessica knows that most relationships just don't work out for a woman with a past like hers. When Will keeps insisting on sleeping with her, she finally gives in, but Jessica knows in her heart it will never last. From Goodreads.
What I particularly like about this series is the relationship between the father and his adult sons. I have already read the third book in the series and decided that I wanted to start from the beginning.
In this book it is the father that has to find love and it all ends happily after a few misunderstandings involving the ex-wife.

I'll Be Watching You by Charles de Lint
Rachael Sorenson feared
she would never escape her ex-husband's abuse. Then a passing stranger
came to her rescue---a stranger who had watched her from afar.
He was a photographer, and Rachael was his perfect subject. He lived only to make her happy---and eliminate those who didn't.
Now he wants more than her beauty. She owes him her life---and he means to collect. From Goodreads.
This was scary as I hate anything about stalking. It doesn't help that the book is seen both from the victim's and the perpetrator's POW. We follow them both and the further into the story the more scary it gets. To me it is the knowing that the bad thing is going to happen and anxiously waiting for it that is scary. It was not an enjoyable read but it scared me as it was meant to.
