Three Girls and a Baby by Rachel Schurig

Ginny McKensie's life is spiraling out of control.
Finished with college, she should have been planning her wedding. After all, Ginny and Josh were made for each other—everyone said so. Except the love of her life didn't agree.
Now Ginny is back in her hometown, unwillingly single, and stuck in a dead-end job. When she discovers she's pregnant, Ginny is convinced her life is ending. Instead of planning a future with Josh, she's learning the truth about morning sickness, juggling bills, and seeing just how far designer jeans can stretch.
Her life-plan never included dating again (not even with her too-hot new boss), or being a single mother at 23. Now, with the help of her best friends, Annie and Jen, Ginny must try to re-imagine—and rebuild—a life she never wanted.
From Goodreads.

This was good. I liked the way Ginny changed from being very dependent on her boyfriend to a strong independent responsible mother. Also the relationship between the three girls even through Ginny's depression after Josh left her. I really disliked Josh's parents. I like free books that draw me in so I want to buy the next books in the series.

Nerilka's Story by Anne McCaffrey

Everyone, holder and dragonrider alike, pitched in to help--except Nerilka's father, who refused to share Fort Hold's bounty with the other holds. So, ashamed of her family and determined to doher part, Nerilka packed up medicines and supplies and sneaked off to aid her people. Her quest to help wherever she was most neded led her finally to Ruatha Hold, where Lord Alessan was frantically inoculations against the dread plague.
Nerilika had long ago abandoned the hope of marraige and a home of her own. Now she found happiness in being useful and appreciated---first the Healers and then Alessan made very clear that they were grateful for her help.
She had no idea that her new path would change the course of her life forever!

From Goodreads.

This is a re-read and I was surprised how much I actually remembered from this book as I started reading. Nerilka is a very caring young woman who decides to help out when the plaque hits, opposing her father and leaving her home in secrecy to do this. She is a very strong woman who longs to be useful but also to be appreciated for her work. There is a lot of loss in this book but it has a happy ending.

Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews

The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…
Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan’s long-time rivals are suspect number one.
But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise’s life . William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation’s spymaster.
When William’s and Cerise’s missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they’ll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.
From Goodreads.

This was a great second book in this series. When I read the first book I didn't realise that each book would be about different characters but that is okay. William we met in the first book and both he and Cerise are very likeable strong characters. I also liked the young people Gaston and Lark.

Sapphire of the Fairies by Richard S. Tuttle

The sky is dark. Neither the sun nor the moon have been seen in decades. The land is fruitless, and the seas are barren. No law exists, only the rule of might is exerted over a hapless people by those who can wield it. In a land of darkness and despair, there is one shining light, an ancient prophecy that foretells of the coming king and his companion, the vanquisher of evil.Sapphire of the Fairies is the first of seven volumes of the epic fantasy series Sword of Heavens. Explore a vast continent where elves, dwarves, unicorns, fairies, demons, dragons, and man all exist. Sapphire of the Fairies begins the saga of five humans on the verge of adulthood. Living in a land where no one can be trusted, these five adventurers must restore the magical Sword of Heavens and defeat the Evil One, an evil sorcery whose minions roam the world in an attempt to defeat the ancient prophecy.Discover a world of magic and intrigue created by Richard S. Tuttle, called "one of this century's leading authors of innovative fantasy tales." Volume 1 of Sword of Heavens. From Goodreads.

The start of the book was very slow. The blurb had me expecting something completely different and not the slow character building of four of the young main characters. It wasn't bad, I just didn't expect it. After a while the adventure picks up and at the end of the story things are revealed about several of the characters. I might continue this series at a later date.

Bewitching You by Viola Estrella

Bewitching You -- When steamy romance meets magic and mayhem.
A love spell gone wrong. An interfering ghost. A nosy mind-reading grandmother. And a psychic man-hating mother. To say Sofia Good's life is a mess might be the understatement of the century. But when her visions forecast a love worth fighting for, she's willing to do just about anything to meet the man of her dreams.
Grayson Phillips lost his twin brother in a senseless accident, and now he's trying to gain back control by maintaining a safe and uneventful "life plan." But after sexy, quirky Sofia crash lands into his world he's forced to rethink his strategy.
When a love spell is cast on the pair--drawing them together despite the odds--time will tell what fate has planned for them.
From Goodreads.

This was quite fun with an interfering grandmother and a mother who hates men and a meddling ghost. Sofia has visions and usually she sees her dates married to other women but now she has had visions, explicit sexual visions, about her future husband. Problem is that she hasn't met him yet and when she does, he is engaged. A fun enough read that I might read more from this author.

Pretty in Black by Rae Hachton

Some Things are Pretty. Some Things are Black. Love is both. The sun faded and night began to descend. The sky was a deep navy blue. Marcus sat his violin aside and dropped to one knee, as though he were about to propose. His eyes flickered with seriousness. He took my hand into his. "Ellie, would you frolic in the land of forever with me?"
The Violin
A troubled, suicidal teen meets a mysterious guy in a cemetery who has an unquenchable thirst for her love...and her life.
An evermore saves a girl he was ordered to kill, and as a dangerous romance begin between the two, his wish is for her to join him in eternity.
The Pretty in Black Quartet

Ellie Piper
She wanted to die. He arose from the grave. He was sent to kill her. She was trained to kill those of his kind. But fate had other plans. He searched for 119 years to find her. & There's no way in hell he's letting her go. Dead or Alive. They're fated.
Marcus Marble
How far would you go to be with the one you love? Would you die for her? Would you kill for her? What if the only reason you're still alive is because of her? What if the reason you came back from the dead, was to be with her? But what if your job was to kill her, but you fell in love instead? And now you're being hunted by your own kind?
Destroy? Or be Destroyed?
This is just the beginning.
From Goodreads.

I am not a fussy reader, I like most kinds of books. I give a lot of 3 and 4 Polar Bears but it is very seldom I give only 1 Polar Bear. Unfortunately this book does not deserve more than that.
It is boring and full of stuff that is not explained. A Man comes up to Ellie, he throws a knife at her that she avoids. He continues to tell her she is the chosen one and she has to kill monsters. He throws her a bag of knives and she accepts!! Eh what!!
This was free and it was not worth it.

Shenanigans by T.B. Bond

Meet Edward Richards. She’s your typical girl (if you overlook the fact that she has a man’s name and is a succubus), but when she meets Jackson Loren everything changes. Jackson is hot, fun, and stubborn. He always has an argument for why he should get his way and Edward is having trouble disagreeing. When their first date goes horribly wrong both of them are forever changed.
Fast forward four years and the two of them reconnect. Things heat up with a series of hijinks, interfering sisters, and a supernatural body-switching governess. All the two of them want is to just go on a simple date and be normal in this tale of love, sex, and magic.
From Goodreads.

This was okay but it is at the very low end of three stars. I like the family in this one. Father is human but very special and basically has 6 daughters with 6 different paranormal women. All the girls live with him and have male names. Edward the main character of this book is a succubus but she is young and does not kill people. But because of her, Jackson got turned into a werewolf. 4 years later they meet again and are drawn to each other.
The story didn't feel finished and I am sure that Edward and Jackson's story will continue in the next book though according to the blurb it is one of Edward's sisters and Jackson's room-mate that are going to be the main characters of that book.

Blood Echo by Melissa Simonson

Obsession is the dark side of love.
Iris Avery and her best friend, Estella, spend their time drowning in the empty excesses indulged in by their crowd of Upper East Side snobs until Estella’s sudden, shocking death.
Iris searches for answers in everything from philanthropy to hypnotherapy, feeling her existence is nothing more than a dark half-life full of guilt and repentance, but finds only endless questions. And several of them revolve around her when she discovers she’s connected to a high-profile murder.
Later, Iris begins hearing Estella’s voice whispering cryptic commentary in her head, and she can’t help but wonder if the hypnotherapy has been helping or hurting. Is her friend trying to warn her about something?
Bizarre packages pile up on her doorstep, and their meaning is obvious: Iris’s secrets aren’t so secret after all.
From Goodreads.

This was very different from what I expected from the blurb. I expected a thriller with a slight paranormal aspect and a grief stricken girl, nothing too much out of the ordinary. This is full of weird twists and turns and I never guessed the ending till very close to the end and before that it had me guessing like mad about who could be the murderer.

Forever Charmed by Rose Pressey

Halloween Laveau is descended from a long line of witches. Yes, her name is Halloween. The cosmic universe is definitely playing some kind of sick joke on her. She’s the ultimate witch cliché, complete with a black cat and spooky house. Thank heavens she’s missing the warts and flying broom.
When Halloween inherits her great-aunt’s manor, she decides to put the house to good use as a bed-and-breakfast. Her first guest is the sinfully good-looking Nicolas Marco, but he’s not here for the continental breakfast. Halloween discovers a ratty old book in the attic. It’s written in an unfamiliar language, and unknown to her, the tome is cursed.
Halloween soon learns there’s a link between the book and her newfound talent as a necromancer. But her new skills come with a catch: the reanimated dead aren’t as cupcake-sweet as they were when they were alive. When a rival witch comes after the book, Halloween doesn’t know who to trust–the sexy vampire who says he wants to save the day, or the warlock who says he can destroy the book once and for all.
Halloween had better learn fast. Because when the dead start rising, only a powerful witch can put them back under
.
From Goodreads.

This was okay but no more. Halloween is not a very good witch till she inherits a house from her aunt and finds a special spellbook and suddenly she is incredible. Two gorgeous men turn up, they both say the want to help her but neither of them is telling her everything. I will only continue this series if I can find the next book for free.

Unicorn Bait by S.A. Hunter

She wants to go home and all she needs is a unicorn.
When Naomi discovers a unicorn horn in her late grandfather's belongings, she doesn’t actually believe it’s real, but her grandfather had meant for her to have it, so she takes it home. While cleaning it, she accidentally pricks herself on the horn's point and is magically transported to another planet that is filled with strange and dangerous creatures. The most dangerous being her brand new husband—Lord Tavik. Naomi doesn't know much about her brand new husband, not even what he looks like, and he assures her that if she tries to sneak a peek at his face, he'll kill her.
Needless to say, Naomi desperately wants to go home, but that poses a problem because the only way she knows how is by unicorn horn, and the one she had, stayed on Earth. Her best hope is a crazy witch named Agatha, but Agatha is the one who tricked her into marrying Tavik. And then RAN OFF. Naomi must find a way to ditch her husband, find the witch, and get a unicorn to send her back home. It shouldn't be that hard to find a virgin, right?

This started a bit slow but luckily it picked up and got quite interesting. Not everything is as it seems in this book and I especially liked the twist with the virgin even though it is not the first time it has been used.

Enchanted Secrets by Kristen Middleton

A modern day tale of romance, mystery, and witches.
When shy, eighteen-year-old Kendra meets the new guy at school, Tyler, she can't help but be drawn to his irresistible charms. Later, she agrees to visit his family's new shop, Secrets, and is drawn into a world that takes her breath away. Unfortunately, where magic reigns, so does danger, and she is forced into an adventure that leaves her racing against the clock to stop an evil curse.
  From Goodreads.

This was a book with humour and mystery. Being an identical twin myself with a mother who is also an identical twin makes it fun to read as that is what the main character is. Though I haven't discovered my own magical abilities yet. I also like that there is a twist that I hadn't seen coming.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”
So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?
Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.
From Goodreads.

This was okay. It was a fun idea about a scavenger hunt between strangers starting in a bookshop.
I liked Lily okay but not Dash so much, it seems he is nice to his friends but he can be rather rude to other people. I liked Boomer and especially Great-aunt Ida who seemed to be quite a character. It was cute and funny in between but just didn't draw me in.

Loveable Christmas Angel by Mimi Barbour

Aloha! Sweet romance, lovable angel, and a prickly little boy’s Christmas wish.
Christmas in Hawaii! How lucky can a girl get? Except Leilani is bringing her mother’s ashes home to Waikiki and has an urgent plea of help from an aunt she’s never even met. After winning two free nights in prestigious Hotel Jordan, things take a turn she never expected. First, she is stuck in an elevator with the prickly, but luscious Mr. Jordan. Secondly, her aunt is a sick woman and only held on for one reason. She wants to pass on her most precious possession… her five-year-old grandchild. The same prickly little fellow that takes one look at Leilani, slaps his fist on his hips and yells, “Go away!”
Kale is the owner of the Jordan Hotel Chain and he can’t believe his rotten luck. He broke up with a spoilt brat of a girlfriend and now he’s stuck in an elevator with a big-eyed, effusive tourist. How in the world can a guy who’s so worldly be hooked on a lively beauty with more dilemmas than anyone he’s ever met?
  From Goodreads.

I really liked Leilana even though she seems a bit too good sometimes. She didn't know she had any family after her mother's death and suddenly she is in charge of Mano her 5 year old cousin and of course in love. Then there is the loveable elderly taxi-driver Pi who helps her from the moment she arrives in Hawaii. It was a cosy, heart warming story. Perfect Christmas holiday read.

The Little Christmas Kitchen by Jenny Oliver

Christmas at the Davenports’ house was always about one thing: food!
But when sisters Ella and Maddy were split up, Ella to live in London with their Dad, and Maddy staying in Greece with their Mum, mince pies lost their magic.
Now, a cheating husband has thrown Ella a curved snowball…and for the first time in years, all she wants is her mum. So she heads back to Greece, where her family’s taverna holds all the promise of home. Meanwhile, waitress Maddy’s dreams of a white Christmas lead her back to London…and her Dad.
But a big fat festive life-swap isn’t as easy as it sounds! And as the sisters trade one kitchen for another, it suddenly seems that among the cinnamon, cranberries and icing sugar, their recipes for a perfect Christmas might be missing a crucial ingredient: each other. From Goodreads.

Ella and Maddy are two sisters that got split up when their parents divorced. They both resent the parent they didn't live with as they felt discarded.
Now many years later Ella, after her marriage breaks up, comes to Greece to stay with her mum and Maddy goes to London hoping not to meet her dad. The girls used to be close but they both felt the other has a better life than they themselves do, but as is often the case looks can be deceiving and not everything is as it seems.
It is a Christmas story and a romance so of course all ends well.

Driven to Date by Susan Hatler

(Better Date than Never series, Book #7)
Career-driven attorney, Jill Parnell, has worked long and hard to become a partner at Corbett, Gray, & Shaw. When the coveted position is given to the boss’s nephew, she does what any intelligent employee would do—attends a colleague’s wedding and schmoozes a high-powered partner at another law firm.
Her potential new boss has only one condition for her, that she demonstrate a personal life that will support a thriving career. Pretending to have a boyfriend is outside Jill’s comfort zone, but she invites the best man to act the part and Ryan is all-too eager to play her significant other. Sparks fly between them, but she reminds herself she’s only driven to date to get back on the partner track.
When Jill discovers Ryan is the lawyer who stole her promotion, her charade threatens to implode. But breaking off their pretend relationship could cost her the job of her dreams. And the more she gets to know Ryan, the more she’s tempted to tame the bad boy, and make him her own.
From Goodreads.

This was a cute, fun story. I liked the way Jill changes her life after being passed for promotion. She might not be changing because of the right reasons but she finds that the changes are good for her and she starts having more fun. I am not sure why Ryan is described as the bad boy as nothing he does in this books merits that label.

Family Magic by Patti Larsen

Sixteen-year-old Sydlynn Hayle is the daughter of a powerful witch and a demon lord of the seventh plane. The trouble is, she just wants to be ordinary. Syd struggles to survive the minefield of her new high school while being torn between her attraction to football hero Brad Peters and the darkly mysterious Quaid Moromond. When her coven comes under attack, Syd is forced to face the fact only her power can save her family’s magic. From Goodreads.

Another book I have had on my TBR list for ages. Syd is half witch, half demon and just wants to be ordinary. She is 16 and just can't wait till she is 18 so she can have her powers removed. Of course she instead needs to use her powers to save her family and during this finds out a lot more about her own powers. A lot of teenage high school angst and bullying in this book as well.

The Circus Is Coming by Noel Streatfeild

Threatened with life in separate orphanages when their aunt dies, two children run away to search for their uncle who works for a circus and find that they can become a part of the hard work and colorful performances of the tenting season. From Goodreads.

Peter and Santa are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt who didn't give them a very good schooling but taught them that they were better than everyone else. When they run away to avoid separate orphanages and come to the circus they find out how little they know. Peter has a very tough time of it and is very annoying till he find his love of horses.
It is a book of growing up, finding out what you want in life and the hard work to get there. This is a children's story and of course has a happy ending.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

Under the streets of London there's a place most people could never even dream of. A city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, knights in armour and pale girls in black velvet. This is the city of the people who have fallen between the cracks.
Richard Mayhew, a young businessman, is going to find out more than enough about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his workday existence and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and utterly bizarre. And a strange destiny awaits him down here, beneath his native city: neverwhere.
From Goodreads.

This was really good and as weird as Neil Gaiman's books often are. All the different factions in Neverwhere trying to get along or not and it seems some people have lived for centuries. Richard being an unlikely hero and Door looking for the killer of her family. Travelling through Neverwhere is interesting and I wouldn't mind reading more books set in this world.
