Nothing but Reading Challenges - Book Buffs’ Battleship Finished

I have completed this challenge and read the 4 books required. I was assigned to team Nautilus and we have had a great captain and helpers. I have to admit I still am not sure how it was all put together but the captain of our team made sure the books we read made the most points possible and she did a very good job as our team won the challenge.

The books I read for this challenge:
  1. Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs
  2. For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison
  3. A Clockwork Christmas by J.K. Coi, P.G. Forte, Stacy Gail, Jenny Schwartz
  4. Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs

DURATION: This will be a month-long team challenge starting Friday, March 7th and ending Friday, April 4th. It is a simplified version of the popular game Battleship.

The size of each team will depend on the number of players joining. (We’re guessing there will probably be between four to six players per team.)

RULES: You must be able to read a book a week to participate in this challenge. If you cannot commit to at least one book a week, please do not sign-up for this challenge.

PAGE COUNT: Books read must be 160 pages or more in length, as determined by the most popular edition posted on GRs. Audiobook are fine. Please, no graphic novels.

GENRES & CARDS: Each team will be given a card like the following one, indicating y axis (letters) and x axis (numbers).:
The twenty-five genres listed below will be placed randomly by the Mods of NBRC and will be different for each team.

Each Team Captain will be messaged their team’s card and they will need to forward it to their team members, or even better, set up their own GRs group to discuss their strategy. If your profile is set to private, you will need to be friends with your Team Captain and the Mod Account.

DO NOT share your card with other teams!

A new card will be offered to a team half way through the competition, at which time the team may decide to stick with the original or use the new one. This decision must be made before a challenging team makes their call on a receiving teams’ board.

Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs

Assaulted by the bitter cold of a Montreal winter, the American-born Dr. Temperance Breman, Forensic Anthropologist for the Province of Quebec, digs for a corpse where Sister Elisabeth Nicolet, dead over a century and now a candidate for sainthood, should lie in her grave. A strange, small coffin, buried in the recesses of a decaying church, holds the first clue to the cloistered nun's fate. The puzzle surrounding Sister Elisabeth's life and death provides a welcome contrast to discoveries at a burning chalet, where scorched and twisted bodies await Tempe's professional expertise. Who were these people? What brought them to this gruesome fate? Homicide Detective Andrew Ryan, with whom Tempe has a combustive history, joins her in the arson investigation. From the fire scene they are drawn into the worlds of an enigmatic and controversial professor, a mysterious commune, and a primate colony on a Carolina island. From Goodreads.

I keep having to tell myself that the TV-series Bones is only loosely based on this book series. The Dr. Temperance Brennan is a very different woman than on TV. She is an ex-alcoholic, mother and quite emotional. I still enjoyed the book and I am definitely going to continue reading this series.

A Clockwork Christmas by J.K. Coi, P.G. Forte, Stacy Gail, Jenny Schwartz

We wish you a steampunk Christmas!
Changed forever after tragedy, a woman must draw strength from her husband's love. A man learns that love isn't always what you expect. A thief steals the heart of a vengeful professor. And an American inventor finds love Down Under. Enjoy Victorian Christmas with a clockwork twist in these four steampunk novellas. This anthology includes:
Crime Wave in a Corset by Stacy Gail
This Winter Heart by P. G. Forte
Wanted: One Scoundrel by Jenny Schwartz
Far from Broken by J. K. Coi

From Goodreads.

It has taken me quite a while to finish this audio book.
There are four stories in this book:
★Crime Wave in a Corset by Stacy Gail: I didn't like this much, I just couldn't get into it.
★This Winter Heart by P. G. Forte: More interesting and a happy ending.
★Wanted: One Scoundrel by Jenny Schwartz: This I enjoyed the most. The scoundrel is not what he seems.
★Far from Broken by J. K. Coi: This was okay but a very violent theme.
All in all this was only okay. It was steampunk but not particularly Christmassy.

For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison

Despite dating one vampire and living with another, Rachel Morgan has always managed to stay just ahead of trouble...until now.
A fiendish serial killer stalks the Hollows, and no one living in or around Cincinnati - human, inhuman, or undead - is safe.
An ancient artifact may be the key to stopping the murderer - a mysterious relic that is now in the hands of Rachel Morgan, fearless independent bounty hunter and reckless witch. But revealing it could ignite a battle to the death among the vast and varied local supernatural races.
Rachel's been lucky so far.
But even she can't hide from catastrophe forever.
This mass market paperback edition includes the short story "The Bridges of Eden Park.
From Goodreads.

This is the fifth book in the Hollows series and I am still enjoying it and have several more lined up to read. Life is still not easy for Rachel. Both her room-mate and boyfriend are vampires, she is part of a werewolf pack (very small) and an elf wants something she has.
There is not a happy ending in this book.
The short story at the end of the book was a nice wee story.
This series should be read in order as everything that happens is a continuation of earlier books.

Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.
Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.
When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.
From Goodreads.

Lily a Mermaid has come to live on land with her human aunt. When she first arrives the next door neighbor Quince is okay but then he starts behaving obnoxiously and over the next 3 years she comes to hate him. Lily is infatuated with a boy she has hardly anything to do with. It was very predictable, Quince of course behaves like he does because he loves her. There were too many sea puns in the book. Though it was a cute easy read I am not sure I am going to read the next in the series.
