Champagne Chic Lemonade Money by De-ann Black

Bee works as a dressmaker in a vintage fashion shop in Glasgow. Joyce, the owner of the shop, has hired Bee and another dressmaker, Alma, to help her repair, upscale and make vintage dresses, skirts, tops and other accessories. The dress shop also has a vintage haberdashery selling bargain fabrics, yarns, and sewing and knitting patterns.
When it comes to make do and mend, Bee, Joyce and Alma offer gorgeous vintage clothes, patterns and fabrics for bargain prices. The shop enables customers to look great for less - Champagne Chic for Lemonade Money.
As the demand for their beautiful vintage clothes and fabrics becomes increasingly popular will Bee make time for romance?
Gilles the handsome owner of the coffee shop next door who bakes traditional cakes, scones and bread, vies for Bee's affections against a mystery man who regularly goes past the vintage dress shop's front window.
In Bee's world of vintage dressmaking, patterns, fabrics, romance, knitting and sewing there's only one thing for sure - there's more than one way to stuff a robin.
From Goodreads.

This was not as good as the previous books I have read by De-ann Black. It was still cosy and a few people have quite interesting pasts. I also think it is the first book with a scary character and that might be what I didn't like.

Dog Day Wedding by Rich Amooi

Giovanni Roma was jilted at the altar. Twice. Meeting Natalie is an enchanting distraction—too bad she’s engaged to another man. To top it off, Giovanni’s mother has a mouth with no filter and is obsessed with finding her son a suitable baby-maker.
Natalie DeMarco is a good cop with one problem. Cold feet. Her fiancé is a decent man, but she’s starting to wonder if decent is good enough. Maybe the doubts could be blamed on Giovanni, that guitar-making Italian hunk next door.
Giovanni knows he must do something, but things get out of hand when he learns he’s not the only one who objects to the wedding.
From Goodreads.

This was a fun read, totally unrealistic in places but still very funny. Giovanni and Natalie have horrible relationships but luckily find each other. Giovanni's  mother is unbelievable but hilarious.

Getaway by Rosemarie Naramore

After Portland Police Officer, Shelley Newland, is involved in a shooting while on the job, she decides to head to the Oregon Coast to clear her head. Rather than stay in a hotel, she opts to take her parents’ old Terry trailer. She’s sentimental about it, despite the fact that it’s falling down around her.
At the RV park, she meets handsome Portland Police Detective, Jake Castle, who has some things to work out in his own life. She’s also befriended by a group of senior citizens who are determined to help both her and Jake work through their problems.
When the two begin to have feelings for one another, can Jake convince Shelley his love for her is the real deal? Or will circumstances in Shelley’s life cause her to push him away?
From Goodreads.

This was a sweet romance with a bit of suspense. Both Shelley and Jake need to make some decisions about their future. I liked the group of senior citizens at the camp site.

The Synchronicity War Part 1 by Dietmar Wehr

After almost a century of peaceful exploration and colonization of space, the United Earth Space Force stumbles across a shockingly xenophobic alien race that has more and better armed ships and refuses all attempts at contact. As the outgunned Space Force is driven back in battle after battle in what appears to be a war of extermination, one officer experiences precognitive visions that help him blunt the enemy onslaught but he can't control or predict when they occur.
With the Senior Brass convinced that he's a tactical genius, he's given more and more responsibility and is terrified by the belief that Humanity's Fate rests on his shoulders. Can he solve the mystery of his precognitive visions before the Human Race plunges into the abyss of total extermination? This is Volume 1 of a military SF series about desperate space battles and the men, women and Artificial Intelligences, who fight and die in them.
From Goodreads.

This was good but a bit too technical. I like the main guy Shiloh who gets these visions that help him in battle and also his relationship with the Artificial Intelligences. It kind of ends on a cliffhanger which I wasn't quite ready for and that was a pity.

The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

'You're not Mia Thermopolis any more, honey,' Dad said. I raised my head. 'I'm not?' I said, blinking. 'Then who am I?' He went, kind of sadly, 'You're Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, Princess of Genovia.'
A PRINCESS??
ME???

Yeah, right.
One minute Mia's totally normal. Next minute she's heir to the throne of Genovia.
Well, her dad can lecture her until he's royal-blue in the face, but no way is Mia going to behave like some posh princess. And they think she's moving to Genovia? Er, hello?
From Goodreads.

I read a lot of YA. This is more a children's book than YA in my opinion. It is sweet enough, quite cute and has some funny parts in it. It is too sweet for me and her daydreaming about being a superstar at the same time as she doesn't want to be a princess is a bit too stupid. I don't think I will read more in this series.

Wind, Sand And Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

From the TWENTIETH CENTURY CLASSICS series, a title, which describes the author's experiences during the 1920s, when he flew for the pioneering airline, Latecoere, which opened up the first mail routes across the Sahara and the Andes. First published in 1939. From Goodreads.

This is one of my husband's favourite books, but clearly not mine. It is interesting enough and has a lot of information about flying and the desert. Unfortunately I found it a bit dry. I do love his book The Little Prince, though.

Girl's Guide to Witchcraft by Mindy Klasky

Jane Madison has a problem. Or two. Or three. She’s unhappily working as a librarian. She has a crush on her oblivious Imaginary Boyfriend. And she just learned she won’t receive a well-deserved raise; instead, she can live for free in a cottage on the library grounds.
When Jane settles into her new home, she discovers a hidden chamber lined with ancient books about witchcraft. Her first spell awakens a feline familiar. Her second makes her irresistible to men. Those magical workings attract a sexy magical warder, and Jane’s life is quickly turned upside down.
Does Jane have what it takes to become a real witch?

From Goodreads.

This was a funny book. Jane, not knowing she is a witch and without trying to, awakens her familiar. A cat turned human, Neko is quite a character and he of course loves fish and milk. Jane has some problems after making herself irresistible to men, especially the caretaker of the library is taken with her. I also like her friendship with Melissa.

Sing for Me by Penelope Reece

CHLOE HASKELL, a university student and runaway diva, is determined to never sing again. After escaping a life in the spot light, she wants only to have a normal life. But when an old flame comes to town, Chloe must decide if she’s willing to forget the past in order to fall in love with the man who broke her heart.
RHYS RYTHER, a Broadway composer, has been hired as a substitute professor at the university. There, he’s surprised to learn that his ex girlfriend, the girl he left without an explanation, is a student at the same university. What's even more surprising is that he still has feelings her.
When Chloe unintentionally gets cast in the school’s production of The Phantom of the Opera, unexplained events start to happen. She sees shadows everywhere. A ghost haunts her dreams. And someone is watching her. But is it all in her mind or has a dead man come back to claim her?
As Chloe and Rhys get closer, he learns that she’s been keeping a secret. It’s a secret so dark that could very well tear them apart. And when the impossible happens, can Rhys overcome Chloe’s dark past in order to save her from an even darker future?
From Goodreads.

This was better than expected. It is a romance, but just as much a thriller and quite scary. At the same time it was a quick and easy read. I find books with stalkers and abusive people more scary than gory bloody books.

Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö

The masterful first novel in the Martin Beck series of mysteries by the internationally renowned crime writing duo Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, finds Beck hunting for the murderer of a lonely traveler. On a July afternoon, a young woman's body is dredged from Sweden's beautiful Lake Vattern. With no clues Beck begins an investigation not only to uncover a murderer but also to discover who the victim was. Three months later, all Beck knows is that her name was Roseanna and that she could have been strangled by any one of eighty-five people on a cruise. As the melancholic Beck narrows the list of suspects, he is drawn increasingly to the enigma of the victim, a free-spirited traveler with a penchant for casual sex, and to the psychopathology of a murderer with a distinctive--indeed, terrifying--sense of propriety. From Goodreads.

This was interesting. I don't read a lot of crime novels and not very often books from Scandinavia. Martin Beck is a police inspector who and has to solve the murder of Roseanna an American tourist in Sweden. It takes time and nothing goes to plan. At the same time we see snippets of his home life which is anything but perfect. It is also clear to see it is quite old as a lot of the characters are smokers which of course was not unusual in the 1960's.

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.
Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.
And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.
He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.
From Goodreads.

Another really good fantasy book from Brandon Sanderson. I liked David who has worked hard the last 10 years to learn all he could about the Epics. Also, the way he had studied to remain an average student in order to avoid being noticed. The Reckoners who fight and kill the Epics are quite interesting and I liked the twists and surprises at the end of the story. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
