A Million More Pages - Hogwarts: Backpacking Around The Globe

Backpacking Around The Globe hosted by A Million More Pages on Goodreads.

Wish to travel around the world, but not Race to the end?

It is basically the same as Amazing Race but just alone and no race. We go to locations and do the tasks required and then continue.
My Goodreads thread is HERE and that's where I will be recording everything. In this blog I will add a list of books by month.

Information About Points for Backpackers

As of right now, it is just .25 per book read for the tasks. We are still discussing how we want to handle FF words and points for them, if any.

So, points breakdown:
Round One:
State: Book read = .25
Country: Book read = .25
Transportation: Book read = .25
Detour (Choose ONE): Book read = .25

After Round One, there will no longer be a state location, only country.

Backpackers can skip any task they want, they can do them in any order they want.

Raw Deal by Mark Henwick

Prequel to the best-selling Bite Back series.
“I’d lost my entire team, and nearly lost my life. In a way, I had lost my life, and was left with this—a tightrope walk between hunting down creatures people didn’t believe existed, and being locked up as one.”
After a career-ending incident on a covert military operation, Amber Farrell is surprised to find herself back in her home town of Denver working as a rookie policewoman. But what happened in the army casts a shadow across her life from which she will never be free.
The prequel to the Bite Back series introduces Amber Farrell, a kick ass lady with a secret problem—she’s been bitten by a vampire. She’s working hard to start a new life, hold down a job and meet all the expectations put on her. When people start to die suspiciously in Denver, Amber has to decide between duty and instinct, between what she should do and what she must do.
From Goodreads

This was good. Amber is a strong character. I like that this is not a typical vampire story. Amber was bitten by a vampire, was supposed to be dead, but is still alive. Nobody knows if or when she is going to turn but the military still lets her get out to hunt vampires, though they are keeping a close eye on her. I have added this series to my ever growing TBR pile of books.

Malicious Mischief by Lora Young

Delia Eastman returns home from teachers’ college with two goals: find a teaching position and sidestep her mother’s insistence on finding her a husband. But employers don’t care for women who are smarter than they. Neither do suitors. As she struggles to find her place, she discovers her sleepy Missouri River town has turned into a powder-keg of rivalry between the steamships and the railroads.
Increasingly violent vandalism on the railroad brings her face-to-face with Endy Webster, a handsome trainmaster whose investigation into the crimes leads him to the door of a prominent steamship owner—Delia’s father.
As Delia tries to clear her father’s name, she keeps tangling with Endy. He’s intelligent. He’s charming. And he’s guarding secrets. Thinking he might know more than he’s telling, Delia reluctantly agrees to partner with him to solve the mystery. With the vandalism becoming deadly, they’ll need every scrap of intelligence and logic to stay alive. Working together may not be their first choice, but it might be their last.
  From Goodreads.

This is a Christian, historical mystery.  Neither Christian nor historical fiction are genres I read a lot but I liked this one. Yes, there is a lot of mention of going to church and reproach of people using bad language but it was not done in a pushy way and did not get in the way of the story.
I like Delia, the MC of this story. She is quite intelligent and strong and she has her own opinions of things. This gives her problems as she is suppose to be a meek and obedient girl who should only think of getting married. The mystery was good as it was not as it seemed.

Icelandic Literature - Past and Present

21 books used for the challenge.

Story:
Penelope read the Burial Rites. Written on Flypaper, they were like the Garden Spells of The Magicians – just right for burying The Cold King. Leaving the funeral, she sat at a table in Kelly's Koffee Shop, crying into her tea thinking of the Seven Viking Romances that had ended in one Dog Day Wedding which left her looking for a Weingarten, or a coffee shop. The Wind, Sand And Stars, blowing in through the open windows, heralded some Raw Deal from the The Synchronicity War . Penelope knew that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were up to Malicious Mischief, when a A New Witch in Town, sat down at her table and told her about The Angel's Game. It was not going to be straightforward to get Out of the Easy life she had made for herself.
“I might as well Take Three Birds and fly away,” Penelope said.
The witch smiled, “Not to mention the cat.”
“I’ll give myself the Code Name Verity,” Penelope fiddled with the handle of her mug of tea. “But now, time for my Getaway.”

May 1, 2015 to July 31, 2015
Since school is getting out, we must get ready for our finals. We are a little more relaxed here since you can choose your grade before even starting the test! (And all grades are equal regardless of description)

In each class, the first book you read will earn an OWL, the second book you read will earn a NEWT. You may only read up to 2 books for each class.

🎓 1. Pick a class and choose the discussion you would like to read; your book choice must be determined by the grade you wish to achieve for the discussion.

Each grade has a letter associated with it. This letter may be used in the author's first or last initials, or the main character's initials. It may also be the first letter of the title or series title (A, An, and The are disregarded, the first main word of the title will be used to determine the letter).

Grades
Outstanding: O
Exceeds Expectations: E
Acceptable: A
Poor: P
Dreadful: D
Troll: T

🎓 2. For the second book in the same class, a new grade must be achieved. If you read a book with A for your OWL, you must choose a different letter for your NEWT. See Auror Rules for additional information

🎓 3. You may repeat the discussion topic for the second book read in the class.

A Million More Pages - Hogwarts: The Dragon Nursery

The Dragon Nursery hosted by A Million More Pages on Goodreads.

A dragon challenge. It has no deadline as it is random roll of the die that decides how fast we can create a dragon.

This challenge is all about birthing and raising your very own dragon and is loosely based on the game formerly known as " Cootie ". The object of the game is to build your dragon using various body parts, which correspond to numbers on a die.

Here's how to play.
Step #1. Roll the die, post your roll.
Step #2. Read a book which corresponds to any task under that number.
Step #3. Post your book with completed date and repeat the process until your dragon is complete - which means you have completed at least one task under each number.

Q ~ WHAT HAPPENS IF I ROLL THE SAME NUMBER?

A ~ If you roll a number a second time before your dragon is complete, choose a different option from that number's choices.
~ You must complete a task with each roll, but you do not have to choose the tasks in order.
~ The exception to this is the Number 1. After you roll your first 1 and complete that task, your dragon has an assigned gender. You may re-roll for all other 1's.
~ If you are one of those people who always gets the same number on these random things (you know who you are), you may re-roll after you have exhausted the list of options. That means you won't have to read more than four books for any number!

Points and Time Limit

Because this game depends on the random factor of dice rolls, there are no levels and no time limit.

You will receive 10 points when your dragon is finished, given an appropriate name (male or female), and your final game is posted.

Bonus Point = 1 point if you find and post a picture of your dragon!

Ready? Have fun! And watch out because some of these babies breathe fire!
