Possible Iceland Lists
Icelandic Literature - Past and Present

21 books used for the challenge.

Story:
Penelope read the Burial Rites. Written on Flypaper, they were like the Garden Spells of The Magicians – just right for burying The Cold King. Leaving the funeral, she sat at a table in Kelly's Koffee Shop, crying into her tea thinking of the Seven Viking Romances that had ended in one Dog Day Wedding which left her looking for a Weingarten, or a coffee shop. The Wind, Sand And Stars, blowing in through the open windows, heralded some Raw Deal from the The Synchronicity War . Penelope knew that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were up to Malicious Mischief, when a A New Witch in Town, sat down at her table and told her about The Angel's Game. It was not going to be straightforward to get Out of the Easy life she had made for herself.
“I might as well Take Three Birds and fly away,” Penelope said.
The witch smiled, “Not to mention the cat.”
“I’ll give myself the Code Name Verity,” Penelope fiddled with the handle of her mug of tea. “But now, time for my Getaway.”

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer.
She devises a plan to get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street. Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test.
With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny.

From Goodreads.

This was interesting. A very hard life for Josie, especially coping with her awful mother and her boyfriend. Luckily she has some wonderfully supportive friends, and though I was several times scared about the direction Josie was taking, I liked the way it all finished.

Returning Pride by Jill Sanders

Everything seems to be going Iian’s way, he has a successful restaurant, a beautiful home, family, and friends. He’s even overcome the loss of his hearing, but why does he still feel like something is missing?
Allison has worked hard to make a name for herself in the art world; now all she wants is peace and quiet to work on her passion. But, with her mother overtaken by illness, she has less time than ever. When everything is stripped away in one tragic blow, and she’s being stalked by a mad-man,
she’ll need the help of her hometown and an old flame, to turn everything around and find what she’s been looking for.
  From Goodreads.

A nice love story. Lian and Allison have known each other always, but sad family events kept them apart. Now Allison is back and they start seeing each other. There are no surprises in this book, even the bad things that happen we know from the beginning who it is and why he is doing it.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution.
Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her. But as Agnes's death looms, the farmer's wife and their daughters learn there is another side to the sensational story they've heard.
Riveting and rich with lyricism, BURIAL RITES evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?
From Goodreads

I liked this one though it is quite a sad and depressing story. Based on a true story about the last execution in Iceland. I liked the way Agnes got treated by the family, compared to how she was treated by the District Commissioner, they soon saw her as a person instead of just a murderer.

Flypaper by C.K. Vile

Raised in a nightmare-like existence he now recreates in his books, Nick Dawkins wants nothing more than to be left alone. Podunk USA should be far enough away, but for his most passionate fans, the end of the earth is still too close.
Danielle, a fan who manages to find him, shows up and his writer's block vanishes. He's inspired. Dreams he didn't know he had are on the brink of coming true.
He should know better. He's the teller of terror. There's no room in his life for fairytales.
From Goodreads.

This was scary or at least creepy. I hate the thought of stalkers and the main character of this book has plenty of them and they are really crazy as well. To me the scary part is that there seems to be no way to end this and I guess it shows with another 3 books in this series. I am not sure I will read more of them.

The Cold King by Amber Jaeger

From the author of The Hemlock Bay Series comes a new retelling of an old tale…
… Not every Beast is a prince charming at heart and not every Beauty is a maiden just waiting for love…
Calia Thorn has lived her entire life in a small town sheltered by the Cold King’s mountain. Working day and night to care for her younger siblings, complete her unending chores and please her selfish, lazy mother has left her with few dreams for her own future.
But then even those meager hopes are taken from her when the Cold King comes down from his mountain to demand a new servant. Ungraceful, unladylike, undesired and unwanted by even her own family, Calia is chosen to be sent to the palace.
The Cold King has lived for three hundred years under a curse imposed by his own father. With no hope of ever breaking it, he settles for keeping his heart frozen against any pain— or hope.
When his new servant arrives, she challenges him in ways no one ever has and sparks fly. But not every Beast is a prince charming at heart and not every beauty is a maiden just waiting for love.
Sometimes happily ever after isn’t so easy…
From Goodreads.

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It is darker than the original and has some violence. I love Fairy Tales and especially remember reading them constantly when on holiday with my grandparents. This was an okay retelling but I still like the original a lot more.

Seven Viking Romances by Hermann Pálsson

Combining traditional myth, oral history and re-worked European legend to depict an ancient realm of heroism and wonder, the seven tales collected here are among the most fantastical of all the Norse romances. Powerfully inspired works of Icelandic imagination, they relate intriguing, often comical tales of famous kings, difficult gods and women of great beauty, goodness or cunning.
The tales plunder a wide range of earlier literature from Homer to the French romances - as in the tale of the wandering hero Arrow-Odd, which combines several older legends, or Egil and Asmund, where the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops is skilfully adapted into a traditional Norse legend.
These are among the most outrageous, delightful and exhilarating tales in all Icelandic literature.
From Goodreads.

This was extremely boring. I like stories about Vikings and Norse mythology but not this book. I think my biggest problem was the names, not the understanding of the names, but the huge number of names. Every time a new character was named we also got the names of all his present family and his forefathers.

Slow Demons by Chris Paton

Studying the precise art of chronology, scientist Luise Hanover is in the process of manipulating time. As her work attracts the interest of foreign powers, Luise is drawn into a fast-paced and chaotic world of shadowy alliances, exotic characters and the madly competitive world of steamracing.
In the shadows and on the streets of London, Luise turns to the only person she can truly trust, Hari Singh and his sulky hawk, Shahin.
Slow Demons is a Steampunk Adventure set in London in the 1850s full of weird machines, exotic characters, dirt, engine grease and demons.
From Goodreads.

This was even better than the first book in the series though I did miss Jamie. Instead there is Jamie's sister Luise who soon gets acquainted with Hari which leads to a lot of trouble. The demons are an interesting concept and I am looking forward to see where all this is leading to. This book has a wee bit of a cliffhanger and I am wanting to read the next book now.

To play, sign up in the sign up thread, you will be paired with others, and we will create a separate discussion thread for your game. The Mod will determine the murder Suspect, Weapon and Room and will "deal" you your hand by sending you a private message (PM).

Once you have finished your turn, you can immediately start another turn. You don't have to wait for the other players to take their turns. When playing the game, please be considerate of the others playing and respond to their messages within one day.

Rereads are allowed.

Books must be started AFTER your dice roll.

Levels of Play
We want to try and match players with others of similar reading habits. When signing up, please indicate at which of the 3 levels you'll play:
Casual Reader: up to one book every 7 days
Heavy Reader: up to one book every 3 days
Fanatic Reader: no book limit!

How to play:

1. Roll the dice. You can choose the number on either of your dice or add the two numbers together to choose your move.

Example: you roll 5 + 3
5 is the Library
3 is the Conservatory
5 + 3 = 8 is the Lounge

The dice numbers represent the following rooms/choices:
1- Return to Last Room Best Epic Fantasy List
2- Ballroom All Time Favorite Romance Novels List
3- Conservatory Best Historical Fiction List
4- Billiard Room Best Crime & Mystery Books
5- Library Best Horror Novels List
6- Study 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List
7- Hall Best Young Adult Books List
8- Lounge Best Non-Fiction Books List
9- Dining Room Best Paranormal/Urban Fantasy Books List
10- Kitchen Thrillers Book List
11- Stay Where You Are Best Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction List
12- Secret Passage to Any Room- When using a Secret Passage, choose one of your opponents, visit their home page, click on the "Compare Books" link, and choose one book to read that you both have in common.

2. To Enter A Room and Make a Suggestion:

Choose from one of these options-

OPTION 1:
Each room has a designated book list. Click on the link for that list and choose one book to read.

OPTION 2: MATCH the first letter of either your Suspect OR Weapon OR Room with the first letter in your book's title OR the author's first or last name.

Suspects:
Miss Scarlet- S
Colonel Mustard- M
Professor Plum- P
Mr. Green- G
Mrs. White- W
Mrs. Peacock- P

Weapons:
Rope- R
Lead Pipe- L
Knife- K
Wrench- W
Candlestick- C
Pistol- P

**This is a change from the ROUND 1 and 2 games. You will only read 1 book per turn, and you have a choice which option to use. You do not have to fulfill both options with your book choice.

Make a suggestion to the designated player on your discussion thread (player designation will be assigned by Mod at start of game). You can make your suggestion before you finish your book, but your turn will not be complete until you finish your book and post your book's title, date completed and rating.

4. To Prove Someone True or False: Post either "I can prove you wrong," OR "I cannot prove you wrong," on the discussion thread. If you can prove them wrong (meaning you have one of those cards in your hand), THEN send that player a PM stating which card (choose only one card) you have.

5. If the first person cannot prove you wrong, then make your suggestion to the next designated player on the list and so on until either someone proves you wrong or you've asked all other players.

6. Your turn ends when someone has told you which card they have AND you have read your book. You may then begin another turn by rolling the dice.

Making a Final Accusation:
You can make a final accusation at the start of any new turn. You DO NOT have to be in the room you're guessing. Simply state in your discussion thread that you're making your final accusation and which suspect, weapon and room you are guessing. The Mod will tell you whether you are right or wrong. If you are wrong, you are done playing and the Mod will redistribute your cards to the other players. If you are right, YOU WIN!

If you have questions about these rules, please see the Questions Thread

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

In a secret world of forbidden knowledge, power comes at a terrible price.
Quentin Coldwater's life is changed forever by an apparently chance encounter: when he turns up for his entrance interview to Princeton he finds his interviewer dead - but a strange envelope bearing Quentin's name leads him down a very different path to any he'd ever imagined.
The envelope, and the mysterious manuscript it contains, leads to a secret world of obsession and privilege, a world of freedom and power and, for a while, it's a world that seems to answer all Quentin's desires. But the idyll cannot last - and when it's finally shattered, Quentin is drawn into something darker and far more dangerous than anything he could ever have expected.
From Goodreads.

I liked the magic part of this book. That doing magic is a lot of hard work and repetition upon repetition. What I didn't like is that it seemed that drinking excessively and doing drugs is not a huge problem and the main character is more or less unhappy about his life the whole way through. Also it got on my nerves all the mentioning of other books and films. To mention some: Of course Harry Potter but also Karate Kid, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I have not quite decided if I will continue this series.

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.
When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.
Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….
From Goodreads.

I really liked this. All the Waverleys have different gifts but they are subtle. Claire and her sister Sydney are so different but when they finally talk about their childhood they understand each other and what has made them act the way they did. Bay, Sydney's daughter is cute, but my favourite side character is Evanelle. This elderly lady who just has to give people things even though she doesn't know why, that is her gift. If you get something from Evanelle keep it with you as you are sure to need it at some point in the future. She is really sweet.
I have ordered the next book from the library.

The Return by A.L. Parks

Eve Carlisle had a singular purpose - sell the rustic house nestled in the Colorado ski resort town.
Tortured by her husband’s betrayal, the beautiful divorcee refused to give her heart to another man. But Jake had been a happy surprise, with his mesmerizing blue eyes, warm smile, strong but gentle nature – as well as being incredibly sexy.
She had convinced herself the relationship with Jake was nothing more than a fling. After all, she had a life in Newport, with society friends and a lucrative career as a family court judge. Still, Jake had a definitive hold over her, and she was finding it hard to think clearly where he was concerned.
The demons of prior failed marriages haunt them both, and threaten to end things just as they are beginning. When Jake tells Eve he is falling in love with her, Eve refuses to believe it can last. Returning to Newport, the hollowness of her existence exposed, she must confront her fears before she loses Jake forever.
From Goodreads.

Another romance, of course with a predictable end. I liked Jake but I thought that Eve was just a bit boring. At the same time I feel sorry for her as she has obviously not moved on since her divorce 6 years ago. Not likely I will read more from this author any time soon.

Champagne Chic Lemonade Money by De-ann Black

Bee works as a dressmaker in a vintage fashion shop in Glasgow. Joyce, the owner of the shop, has hired Bee and another dressmaker, Alma, to help her repair, upscale and make vintage dresses, skirts, tops and other accessories. The dress shop also has a vintage haberdashery selling bargain fabrics, yarns, and sewing and knitting patterns.
When it comes to make do and mend, Bee, Joyce and Alma offer gorgeous vintage clothes, patterns and fabrics for bargain prices. The shop enables customers to look great for less - Champagne Chic for Lemonade Money.
As the demand for their beautiful vintage clothes and fabrics becomes increasingly popular will Bee make time for romance?
Gilles the handsome owner of the coffee shop next door who bakes traditional cakes, scones and bread, vies for Bee's affections against a mystery man who regularly goes past the vintage dress shop's front window.
In Bee's world of vintage dressmaking, patterns, fabrics, romance, knitting and sewing there's only one thing for sure - there's more than one way to stuff a robin.
From Goodreads.

This was not as good as the previous books I have read by De-ann Black. It was still cosy and a few people have quite interesting pasts. I also think it is the first book with a scary character and that might be what I didn't like.

Novel Books & Reading Challenges Wheel-A-Thon II - Finished

Wheel-A-Thon Team Challenge hosted by Novel Books & Reading Challenges on Goodreads.

This was fun as usual. It is not always easy to remember each character in a book in order to spell out a colour. We, as a group, had to spell out different colours using title, author and characters. I read 39 books for this challenge, unfortunately we were nowhere near the winning teams.

About this Challenge
◈ Starts on March 22, 2015 and runs for 8 weeks
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the 8 weeks wins!
◈ Each week the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a colour name
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the colour name for 10 points per letter for books of less than 500 pages and 20 points per letter for books of 500 pages or more
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the colour name are part of their spell-it-out
◈ The team will get an additional 30 bonus points if at least one person in the group reads a book of that colour (the book cover must be about 50% of that colour)
◈ Once teams have read their colour name for the week they can "re-read" the colour name to gain more points (10 points per letter for books of less than 500 pages and 20 points per letter for books of 500 pages or more , but no additional completion points).
◈ BOM bonus: Have a team member write discussion questions for a day of a Book of the Month (BOM) and receive 20 points (limit one BOM bonus per book per team ; that is, if two of your teamies write DQs for the same BOM, you still only get 20 points). NOTE: You can volunteer on the BOM thread to write DQs. If we have more volunteers than days available 3 days prior to the BOM start, then the volunteers will be chosen using a randomizer. If you volunteer and do not write your allocated DQs without notice then you will not be eligible to nominate yourself again for the duration of this challenge
Books must be more than 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 160 pages
◈Only books read during the specified week can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous weeks to use later in the challenge

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used

Colours
We are using crayola colours for the wheel, and the “base” colour this responds to are listed under the spoiler
(view spoiler)

Challenge requirements

IMPORTANT: To be a part of this challenge you need to be able to:
◈ Read at least one book per week
◈ Create a special shelf for the challenge for the books you are reading
◈ Check-in on your team's discussion thread at least once per week
◈ Have fun!

* help motivate your team to complete the spell-it-out each week
* check that the books are posted within the right time frame and submit each week by posting to the captains group (Posts will be due each week by Sunday at noon, Australian Eastern Standard Time - convert this to your timezone here)
