Skip Ralstat is a man so
steeped in grief and despair that life seems no longer possible. After
the death of his wife and child, Skip blames himself. He has given up
his friends, his job, and even his home. Now, homeless, he survives on
the mean streets of Albany. He knows it can't go on, that life must end.
But will it?
Come join him on his most unusual road to redemption. The salvation of one life...lies along this road.
Let the healing from "The Santa Shop" begin. From Goodreads.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. Yes it is sad but it is full of the Christmas Spirit of helping each other.

A Cowboy For Christmas by Kristen James
When her estranged
brother passes, Missy is suddenly an unwanted co-owner to Ocean View
Stables by Florence, Oregon. Missy wants to start over somewhere new
after her old boss burned her. She's jobless and has a wrongly ruined
reputation, so this works out perfectly . . . until she meets the cowboy
running the place. Brent built his dream with determination and
his two hands; he's responsible for everything that happens there.
Secretly, he feels responsible that his former partner died. He also
doesn't hide his belief that Missy won't stick around. Women tend to
take off on him so why would she be any different? They both have a
past that can ruin their future. Can he trust her to stay? Can she
trust him with her heart? From Goodreads.

All I Want for Christmas is You by Lisa Mondello
Santa Claus is going to
have a rough season... Lauren Alexander is raising her daughter alone.
Abandoned by her family for her decision to keep her daughter Kristen,
she has done a pretty good job for the last six years. Or she thought
she had. That's why she is crushed when little Kristen gives up her
wish for a toy or goodie and instead asks Santa for a present for her
mother. But delivering Daddies isn't Santa's bag.
But this Santa has a plan...
Kyle Preston knows what it is like to be abandoned too. Luckily he found the support of loving adoptive parents and has turned himself into one of the most successful Real Estate developers in town.
Building a
house is easy. Building someone's trust is a whole other story. But a
little Christmas magic can make all the difference in the world. From Goodreads.

While Snowbound by Anna J. McIntyre
Weary of lovestruck fans climbing into his bed uninvited and the ever present paparazzi, Brady Gates had planned to take an incognito break from his hectic life and spend several weeks alone at a remote mountain cabin.
Finding himself stranded in a blizzard doesn’t bother him half as much as the fact the one woman he wants is the one woman who is the least interested in him. From Goodreads.

Winter Warmers by Carole Matthews
Three short stories from the wonderfully warm Carole Matthews: Winter Warmers - a gift for you.All I Want for Christmas is You
Christmas is around the corner but Maria just can't get into the spirit - will she ever find Mr Right? But when a secret admirer starts leaving her poems and notes, it looks as though her luck is about to change . . .
Cold Turkey
Tara is in love with a man she can't have. She expected to spend Christmas with him but when the big day arrives, she finds herself alone. Sad and upset, Tara just wants to ignore the festive season - and then a chance encounter changes everything.
About Gardening
I love my husband Sam but our relationship isn't what it used to be. Can I find a way to bring us back together?
Treat yourself to this heart-warming collection - it's perfect for warming up those winter nights. From Goodreads.
I like the first story All I want for Christmas is You. It just went downhill from there and I really don't get the last one. It started and it stopped, there was no story. It didn't help that I thought it was going to be 192 pages and it turned out to be a measly 48! The best thing I can say about Winter Warmers is that it was free - still can't recommend it though.

2013 Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge Finished
2013 Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge hosted by Reading the Paranormal and On a Book Bender.
Here's how it works:
Coupon Clipper: 12 Books
Penny Pincher: 24 Books
Buying in Bulk: 36 Books
Super Saver: 50 Books
Extreme Couponer: 100+ Books
In 2012 I read 28 which is why this year I decided to set my goal at 24 books. Well I have had to upgrade twice and I have now completed this challenge as a Super Saver and read my book number 50, XBestia by Melissa Conway the 16th of October. Since then I have read another three free books.
I have decided to finish at this level as I am sure I won't be able to make it to 100 free books, but I will keep adding books the rest of the year to see how far I can make it.
If Reading the Paranormal and On a Book Bender decides to host this challenge again in 2014 I will definitely take part again. I will have a lower goal though as I have started reading more library books.
My list of books:
Here's how it works:
- Should you choose to participate in this challenge, your goal is to read at least twelve (12) legally obtained FREE e-books. While twelve is the minimum there is no maximum limit.
- Anyone can join. You don’t have to be a blogger, and you don’t have to live in the United States.
- Any E-Reader will work for this challenge, including: iPad, Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, enTourage.
- Please Note: If you don’t have an e-reading device, you can still join in with Amazon’s Free Kindle Reading Apps which you can download for your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, Blackberry and more.
- The challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. You can join at any time.
- e-books in ANY genre count for this challenge as long as it was FREE at the time that you downloaded it.
- Every month in 2013, I will make a post for the 2013 Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge so you can link your reviews. Based on participation, monthly link ups may be combined.
- If you have a blog, create a post announcing your participation in the challenge. Please include a link back to this post.
- Non bloggers: participate by linking up your profile URL from the site you plan to post your reviews on such as Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.
- When you post your book review, you MUST reveal how you obtained the free & legal download. Please make your source clear. We do not condone piracy of any sort.
- You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them.
- Crossovers to other reading challenges is acceptable, but ARCs/galley e-books DO NOT count. Again, this is a Reading Challenge to read as many of the FREE e-books legally offered for your e-reader.

Leopard Moon by Jeanette Battista
A wereleopard, Kess is forced to flee her home and family in Miami once her brother's obsession with her turns violent. She runs from city to city, trying to stay one step ahead of the investigators her family has dispatched to bring her home. Kess ends up in the mountains of North Carolina and attracts the attention of Cormac, a young man with a secret of his own. As she attempts to live as normal a life as her were-nature allows, her brother Sek continues to hunt for her. He believes she is the key to revitalizing their weakened clan and is driven to extreme measures to ensure their continued existence. As Kess' relationship with Cormac deepens, Sek closes in, threatening Cormac's life and Kess' freedom.
When the moon rises, the hunt is on…. From Goodreads.

Wyrd Girl by Jon Jacks
She’s in an Otherworld
I’m the weird girl.
You know; the one every kid in class avoids, just in case what I’ve got is catching.
Not that I care.
See, there are worlds other than this one.
Worlds we pass on to when we die.
Worlds, even, where we exist before we’re even born.
They’re the worlds of the Nyxt.
And, if I don’t handle things right, they’re about to declare war on the living. From Goodreads.

How (Not) to Kiss a Toad by Elizabeth A. Reeves
Life isn't always sweet
for magical baker, Cindy Eller. All her life she's been cursed-- every
man she's ever kissed has turned into a toad. Love isn't likely to come
her way, she knows.
If that weren't a big enough problem, her 'curse' has come to the attention of the Council of Magic and she may never be able to use her powers.
Enter the perfect man-- handsome, sweet, and loves food just as much as Cindy does. It would seem to be a match made in Heaven, or is it?
Cindy isn't the only one keeping secrets.
With toads, cupcakes, romance, magic and ice cream, life never has time to get dull! From Goodreads.
This is exactly what I like in a light read. It is funny, cute and romantic. This is one of those free books that makes me want to buy the next book in the series, which I have done.

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory
Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she's a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost's demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!
Word of Jolie’s incredible ability to bring back the dead spreads like wildfire, putting her at the top of the underworld’s most wanted list. Consequently, she finds herself at the center of a custody battle between a villainous witch, a dangerous but oh-so-sexy vampire, and her warlock boss, Rand. From Goodreads.

DRT by Eric Thomas
Greg, a reclusive
overnight traffic reporter in Washington, DC, has spent his life in
fear, avoiding anything that might shatter his tenuous grasp on normal.
It turns out Greg has no idea what it really means to be afraid. After
witnessing a horrifying fatal crash, a crash Greg believes he had a hand
in causing, he begins to see the ghost of the dead driver. The strain
becomes unbearable as Greg attempts to determine why the ghost has
sought him out, what it wants from him, and whether any of what is
happening is even real.
DRT is the second novel from author Eric Thomas. It's an alternating look at the absurd and the shocking as he tells the story of one man's struggle to maintain his sanity. From Goodreads.

Dollhouse by Anya Allyn
For fifteen year old
Cassie Claiborne, there's only one good thing about moving from steamy
Miami to the wild inland forests of Australia--the even wilder Ethan
McAllister. But Ethan already has a girlfriend--Aisha Damaj--the girl
with a hundred different moods a minute.
When Aisha goes missing on a hiking trip in the local mountains--presumed dead--the whole town points a finger at Ethan. Cassie defends Ethan fiercely. She's just about the only friend he has left.
Is Cassie letting her feelings for Ethan cloud her judgment? Or does something dark lurk out there in the forests? From Goodreads
This was quite scary and didn't give too much away along the way. The worst part of it is that I just didn't realise that this was number one in a series, I totally missed the part where it says (Dollhouse #1) right after the title. I have to buy the next book now as it will be perfect for a Halloween read.

One Glass Is Never Enough by Jane Wenham-Jones
On the surface, Gaynor has it all - money, looks, a beautiful home in the picturesque seaside town of Broadstairs, and Victor - her generous, successful husband. But while Sarah longs for love and Claire is making money, Gaynor wants answers.
Why does Victor behave strangely and who does he see on his frequent trips away? Who makes threatening phone-calls? Sam - strong and silent with a hidden past - becomes an unlikely friend. But nobody is what they seem in this tale of love, loss and betrayal. From Goodreads

Ashlyn is about to discover what she’d thought to be true her whole life, wasn’t, and the truth, too fantastical to imagine. Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, secrets that will change Ashlyn's life forever. From Goodreads.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel
The protagonist Piscine "Pi" Molitor Patel, an Indian boy from Pondicherry, explores the issues of religion and spirituality from an early age and survives 227 days shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean. From Goodreads.
A lot of people rave about Life of Pi, unfortunately I don't think it was as good as that. It might have been a mistake on my part to read this book only a few weeks after seeing the film. I think the film was quite true to the book so I was reading something I already knew which made me feel the book was a bit drawn out..

I Bring the Fire: Part I Wolves by C. Gockel
Meanwhile on Earth, Amy Lewis just wants to get home in time for dinner, but she's on a collision course with chaos, and an old evil is awakening that threatens all the Nine Realms. If Loki remembers exactly what Odin is hiding and manages not to be too distracted by Earthly gadgets, Amy’s boobs, or three day benders, he might be sly enough to stop it – and extract some vengeance at the same time.
This first volume of "I Bring the Fire" is for anyone who suspects chaos and mischief makers might have their own redeeming qualities, and anyone who just wants a good fantasy romp through modern Earth, ancient Asgard, and beyond! From Goodreads.
Norse mythology mixed with modern day. Amy is saved by Loki who then in return needs help from her to find out where his ex-wife and sons are. I really like Amy's Grandmother who of course just accepts the things that are happening.
My biggest problem with this book was the abrupt ending, there is no doubt I will read the next book in this series.

Between the Land and the Sea by Derrolyn Anderson
Everything changes in the summer of her sixteenth year when she is sent to live with her Aunt Abby and Cousin Cruz in the lovely seaside town of Aptos, California.
Only a few weeks after arriving, sixteen year-old Marina has nearly drowned twice, enchanted the hottest guy in high school, and discovered a supernatural creature. If she can manage to survive some increasingly dangerous encounters with unpredictable mermaids, she might be able to unlock the mystery of her past and appease the mysterious forces that want something from her...
And maybe even find true love along the way. From Goodreads.
Another mermaid story. This wasn't as good as the last one, I liked the intelligent mermaids in the other one more compared to the childlike, as in behaviour, mermaids in this one. I am not in any hurry to read the next book but I still might do it at a later date.
