Romance Readers Reading Challenges: Yahtzee Challenge 2015 / 2016 - Finished

Yahtzee Challenge hosted by Romance Readers Reading Challenges on Goodreads.

I have finished and I still think it is fun so I'm going to take part in the next one as well.

It's a 13 month challenge, with the participant 'rolling the dice' once a month. The dice need to be rolled between the 28th of the month before and the 5th of the current challenge month. You will then have the rest of the month to complete that month's task.

The Viscount's Christmas Temptation by Erica Ridley

Certain individuals might consider Lady Amelia Pembroke a managing sort of female, but truly, most people would be lost without her help. Why, the latest on-dit is that rakish Viscount Sheffield is canceling the fĂȘte of the year because he hasn't time for silly soirees. He doesn't need time—he needs her!
When a flash of lightning destroys the venue for his family's annual Christmas ball, Lord Benedict Sheffield intends to enjoy a relaxing holiday for once. But after twelve days of beguiling Lady Amelia's guerrilla tactics, he's up to his cravat with tinsel . . . and tumbling head over heels in love.
From Goodreads.

A short Christmas story. It was okay, I liked Amelia and the way she organized and manipulated Lord Benedict which he soon realised she was doing but let her do anyway.

Prophecy of the Female Warrior by K.A. Young

Anna Wilkins is a prototypical housewife. She buys groceries, picks up the dry cleaning and hosts dinner parties. Everything was picture perfect from the outside looking in until the life she was born to live collided with the life she was living. Her husband is murdered by a creature from another realm, a creature that is only visible to her. Through her pain, his death awakens a part of her she didn't know existed. She is then thrust into a life of Vampires, Werewolves and Sexy Nephilim Warriors. Drawn to her by a bond as old as their race, a Nephilim Warrior finds Anna at her darkest hour and seeks to arouse what lies dormant within her. The scorching sexual attraction she and the Warrior feel for one another may be beyond anything either of them can control... From Goodreads.

I wanted to read this as I started to read a series that is a spin off of this one. It was okay and it is going to be interesting to follow Anna in the next books.

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Elantris was built on magic and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade and Elantris began to rot. And now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium motivated by dogged religious views.
Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris, rediscover the lost magic and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots?
Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.
From Goodreads.

I enjoy Brandon Sanderson's fantasy books and this is no exception. Both Sarene and Raoden are very likeable characters. I liked that even though their marriage was arranged for political reasons they had communicated a lot and were looking forward to meeting each other. All the characters are interesting and have hidden traits and secrets. Even Sarene's dad who seems like a good king has secrets and he is just a small side character.

First Year by J. P. Howards

Lauren Gillan is starting medical school. The last thing she needs in her life is a distraction. When an opportunity arises to learn the identity of her sperm donor father, Lauren gets more than she bargained for. Led by a series of puzzles, she embarks on a journey to discover the truth of her birth and the story behind the professor who is guiding her.
Written by medical school anatomy professor, J. P. Howards, First Year captures the first few weeks of medical school through Lauren’s eyes, and the eyes of her professor, in a humorous and touching way.

From Goodreads.

This was interesting, it was about Loren's first year of medical school. As it is a short book it is not detailed. At the same time it is about her search for her father, the man who was the sperm donor for her mother. It is about friends and family.

The Bridesmaid Blues by Tracey Sinclair

Luce knows she should be thrilled when Jenna asks her to be bridesmaid – after all, they’ve known each other since childhood and Jenna is the best friend any girl could have. But it’s hard to get excited about weddings when you’re terminally single and the best man is the boy who broke your heart: Jamie, the groom’s dashing and irresistible brother. How can she face the man who dumped her when she’s still so hopelessly in love? Then again, maybe this is the perfect opportunity – after all, where better to get back together than at a wedding?
So Luce has six months to figure out how to win back her ex, but she has plenty else on her plate – from an old friend returned to Newcastle with an announcement of her own, to a youthful colleague who may or may not have a crush on her and a mother who is acting very strangely indeed… and that’s all before a mysterious, handsome American walks into her life.
Sometimes being a bridesmaid isn’t all confetti and champagne…
From Goodreads.

I didn't like this much. It was supposed to be funny but I couldn't see that. All I saw was a whiny main character who was drinking constantly. All through the book she is also complaining about being fat  and in the end it turns out she is a size 12 compared to her friend's size 16. Not for me!

The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

In the turbulent and mysterious Barcelona of the 1920s, David MartĂn, a young novelist obsessed with a forbidden love, receives an offer from an enigmatic publisher to write a book like no other before—a book for which "people will live and die." In return, he is promised a fortune and, perhaps, much more.
Once again, the author of The Shadow of the Wind takes us into the gothic universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and creates a breathtaking adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy, and a dizzingly constructed labyrinth of secrets where the magic of books, passion, and friendship blend into a masterful story.
From Goodreads.

This was quite different to what I usually read. There are still immortal characters in it but it is dark and Gothic. There is a love triangle, there is mystery and murder but at a very different level to the light stuff I like. I couldn't read a lot of this but it doesn't mean I didn't like it and I think I will read the first book in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is set at The University, where the brightest minds work to unravel the mysteries of enlightened sciences, such as artificing and alchemy. Auri, a former student (and a secondary but influential character from Rothfuss’s earlier novels) now lives alone beneath the sprawling campus in a maze of ancient and abandoned passageways. There in The Underthing, she feels her powers and learns to see the truths that science—and her former classmates—have overlooked. From Goodreads.

This was nothing like I expected. I at least thought I would find out a bit more about where Auri was from or maybe even how long she had been living beneath the University. You get no such answers from this book.
It is a weird but interesting tale of how Auri sees the world. Everything has it's place and its own name and things will be unhappy if they are not in their place.
The title is very accurate description of this book.

The Flower Hunter's Cottage by De-ann Black

Mairead is a botanical artist, gardener and quilter. She leases the flower hunter's cottage in the Scottish Highlands. She plans to get away from the city and finish the floral artwork for her new book along with her quilt designs.
As part of the lease agreement she has to take care of the traditional cottage garden while the owner, the flower hunter, is away working abroad, searching for a new species of flower.
Mairead arrives at the cottage in January. After settling in, she meets handsome flower grower, Tavion, and Ethel a knitter who spins and dyes her own yarn. While making new friends, Mairead is keen to get on with her artwork and quilting - and get the garden ready for the spring and summer. Romance isn't on her to-do list, but when it comes to love, nothing goes according to plan.
The Flower Hunter's Cottage is filled with flowers, artwork, knitting, quilting, baking cakes, gardening and romance.
From Goodreads.

Raven's Key: A Novel by Siomonn Pulla

Siomonn Pulla's first e-novel is a fast-paced new age adventure with a most unlikely cast of characters. This book is quirky and probably unlike anything you've ever read before. An ancient Sumerian King has hired a shape shifting Raven to steal sacred objects from museum's around the world. A Museum curator and her assistant, a young anthropology graduate student, discover that they are running out of time in this quest to restore the ancient balance of light and dark forces. Together with members from the ancient Council of Light, they must track down the shape shifting Raven, locate the stolen objects and return them to the council. Nearly out of time, they must journey to discover the key to unlocking humanity's shift into the new consciousness of 2012. From Goodreads.

This was quite interesting. Basically we have two different races of aliens. One good and one bad, but as there often is, there is a lot of grey in-between. There are also several different species of immortals and a few humans that got mixed into the mess. This is as far as I can figure out a standalone but I wouldn't mind reading more about some of the characters. Especially Raven who is not quite as he seems.

Shenanigans by T.B. Bond

Meet Edward Richards. She’s your typical girl (if you overlook the fact that she has a man’s name and is a succubus), but when she meets Jackson Loren everything changes. Jackson is hot, fun, and stubborn. He always has an argument for why he should get his way and Edward is having trouble disagreeing. When their first date goes horribly wrong both of them are forever changed.
Fast forward four years and the two of them reconnect. Things heat up with a series of hijinks, interfering sisters, and a supernatural body-switching governess. All the two of them want is to just go on a simple date and be normal in this tale of love, sex, and magic.
From Goodreads.

This was okay but it is at the very low end of three stars. I like the family in this one. Father is human but very special and basically has 6 daughters with 6 different paranormal women. All the girls live with him and have male names. Edward the main character of this book is a succubus but she is young and does not kill people. But because of her, Jackson got turned into a werewolf. 4 years later they meet again and are drawn to each other.
The story didn't feel finished and I am sure that Edward and Jackson's story will continue in the next book though according to the blurb it is one of Edward's sisters and Jackson's room-mate that are going to be the main characters of that book.

How to be a Ghost by Audrey Claire

Divorced mom Liberty "Libby" Grace works as an elementary school teacher and has no social life to speak of. The most she has to worry about is finding a way to fix a leaky faucet without a budget for a plumber. The next thing Libby knows she’s standing at the foot of her son’s bed completely see-through!
Libby can’t remember what happened to her. Is she dead? She doesn’t know for sure because she can’t find her body, and the last place she remembers being, the local hardware store, instead of her own body, she finds the corpse of the store’s owner, husband to the mayor of her small town.
In order to solve the mystery surrounding her disappearance, Libby must figure out who killed George Walsh. Along the way, she gets help from her reclusive neighbor, Ian McClain, who has a secret of his own.
From Goodreads.

This was interesting. It basically starts with Libby suddenly being a ghost. It is a murder-mystery but it is not Libby who has been killed. According to her neighbour she is not quite dead yet and has to find her body if she wants to survive. There are some interesting characters, especially her neighbour Ian who is not quite human.
