All Summer Long by Susan Mallery
Can a summer fling turn into love that lasts a lifetime? Former underwear model turned entrepreneur Clay Stryker has loved, tragically lost and vowed that he'll never risk his heart again. After making his fortune, the youngest of the rugged Stryker brothers returns to Fool's Gold, California, to put down roots on a ranch of his own. But he's frustrated to discover that even in his hometown, people see him only for his world-famous...assets.
Firefighter Chantal (Charlie) Dixon grew up an ugly duckling beside her delicately beautiful mother, a feeling reinforced long ago by a man who left soul-deep scars. Now she has good friends, a solid job and the itch to start a family-yet she can't move toward the future while she's haunted by painful memories.
Clay finds an unexpected ally, and unexpected temptation, in tomboyish Charlie, the only person who sees beyond his dazzling good looks to the real man beneath. But when Charlie comes to him with an indecent proposal, will they be able to overcome their pasts and find a love that lasts beyond one incredible summer? From Goodreads.
It was an okay romance book, a bit too explicit but it fit the story.

The Light Within Me by Carly Fall
When Abby and Noah meet, there is an explosive attraction between them that neither can deny...
As a shy, awkward, social misfit, Abby has gone her whole life feeling as though she's different from everyone else and she simply doesn't fit in well with society as a whole. She longs to feel a real connection with someone, and she finally does when she meets Noah.
Unbeknownst to Abby, Noah is from another world and his sole purpose is to hunt down the evil of his people that was unleashed on Earth hundreds of years ago. He's certain he isn't going to be able to return to his home, and anger and the need for revenge are his constant companions. His focus has been eradicating the evil and making them pay for taking his life on his world away from him.
Noah tries desperately to fight his attraction to Abby so he can keep his focus on his mission. But when Abby gets dragged into the evil and mayhem from Noah's world, he realizes that maybe with Abby he can find a home here on Earth...if he can save her in time. From Goodreads.
It was an okay read and an interesting concept that aliens were on earth to hunt their own escaped criminals. Also, if they give in to the ultimate pleasure, they will become human. This book was free and I will probably read more of this series if they are either free or very cheap.

Guards! Guards!: by Terry Pratchett
Here there be dragons . . . and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all . . .).
Meanwhile, back at Unseen University, an ancient and long-forgotten volume--The Summoning of Dragons--is missing from the Library's shelves. To the rescue come Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, and the rest of the Night Watch who, along with other brave citizens, risk everything, including a good roasting, to dethrone the flying monarch and restore order to Ankh-Morpork (before it's burned to a crisp). A rare tale, well done as only Terry Pratchett can. From Goodreads.
I have tried reading books from the Discworld series before but just thought them too weird. I was told to try this one as that would be a good place to start. I enjoyed it and might now try more.

Merrick by Anne Rice
Anne Rice's richly told
new novel for the first time weaves together two irresistible worlds -
the witches' world and the vampires' world - in a dance of seduction,
death and rebirth.
Lestat's mesmerizing friend Louis de Pointe du Lac is tortured by the memory of the child vampire Claudia, whom he loved and lost. With the help of David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the secret Talamasca organization, Louis appeals to Merrick, the beautiful, mixed-race, illegitimate daughter of the New Orleans Mayfair clan. Merrick must use her black witchcraft to call up the ghost of Claudia - however dangerous this may be - and her search takes her close to the edge, through blood and terror, voodoo and violence.
Sweeping from New Orleans to the Guatemalan jungle, this is vampire literature at its most hypnotic, exotic and splendid. From Goodreads.
This book is number 7 in the Vampire Chronicles. This is a re-read for me, I think I read it the first time 8 years ago. This book is about Merrick who is a Mayfair witch with quite some power. This book is not part of the Mayfair Witches series, they are just mentioned as another part of her family. this book is about Merrick and vampires. I enjoyed it and I read it quite quickly as I wanted to know what was going to happen, I couldn't quite remember from my last read.
I am at the moment reading a book here and there but for new readers of this series I would recommend starting at the beginning as there are a lot of things mentioned in this book that are from earlier books.

Sharpe's Prey by Bernard Cornwell
It is 1807 and Lieutenant
Richard Sharpe, recently returned to England, is offered a new job: go
to Copenhagen, help the Honourable John Lavisser deliver a bribe, and so
stop a war. It seems very easy.
But nothing is easy in a Europe stirred by French ambitions. The Danes possess a battle fleet that could replace every warship the French lost at Trafalgar and Napoleon's forces are gathering to take it. The British must stop them.
Sharpe is ordered to protect Lavisser against the French agents who infest the Danish capital. It is a shadow war of spies and brutality in which Sharpe is a sacrificial pawn. But sometimes pawns can change the game.
As the Danish army attempts to raise the British siege, it is met by Sir Arthur Wellesley with a force of redcoats and riflemen. Copenhagen is doomed, IN nights of merciless British bombardment, Sharpe must protect a woman, hunt a traitor and stay alive. From Goodreads
This book only just made it to 3 Polar Bears. I needed a book that was historical fiction and a book that was number 5 in a series and this book fit. Another reason to choose this book was that most of it takes place in Denmark and, as I am Danish, this appealed to me. After reading it, which at times was hard going, I must admit that it taking place in Denmark just wasn't enough when I am no fan of military books. I liked the main character which was part of bringing this from 2 to 3 Polar Bears.

Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi
How do you tell your part in the biggest tale in history?
I ask because it's what I have to do. I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player (and a pawn) in a interstellar chess match to save humanity, or to see it fall. Witness to history. Friend. Daughter. Human. Seventeen years old.
Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don't know my tale: How I did what I did — how I did what I had to do — not just to stay alive but to keep you alive, too. All of you. I'm going to tell it to you now, the only way I know how: not straight but true, the whole thing, to try make you feel what I felt: the joy and terror and uncertainty, panic and wonder, despair and hope. Everything that happened, bringing us to Earth, and Earth out of its captivity. All through my eyes.
It's a story you know. But you don't know it all. From Goodreads.
I was a bit wary of this book, it is the story of The Last Colony told from Zoe's point of view. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. There were some new stories in it which meant it was different enough from The Last Colony. I especially liked Zoe's relationship with the Obin, her alien protectors.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
It is the middle of the
summer, but there is an unseasonal mist pressing against the
windowpanes. Harry Potter is waiting nervously in his bedroom at the
Dursleys' house in Privet Drive for a visit from Professor Dumbledore
himself. One of the last times he saw the Headmaster was in a fierce
one-to-one duel with Lord Voldemort, and Harry can't quite believe that
Professor Dumbledore will actually appear at the Dursleys' of all
places. Why is the Professor coming to visit him now? What is it that
cannot wait until Harry returns to Hogwarts in a few weeks' time?
Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts has already got off to an unusual start,
as the worlds of Muggle and magic start to intertwine ... From Goodreads.
I am just one of many that thinks Harry Potter is a brilliant series. The tale of the wizard Harry who with the help of his friends is battling the evil Lord Voldemort. If you like books about witches and wizards and haven't read the Harry Potter series yet, hurry up and read.

Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong
Being the world’s only female werewolf has its advantages, such as having her pick of the Otherworld’s most desirable males. And Elena Michaels couldn’t have picked a more dangerously sexy and undyingly loyal mate than Clayton Danvers. Now their bond will be put to the ultimate test as they follow a bloody trail of gruesome slayings deep into Alaska’s frozen wilderness.
There’s nothing the werewolf community dislikes more than calling attention to itself. So when a pair of rogue man-eaters begins hunting humans, it’s up to Elena and Clayton to track down the predators. But any illusions their task would be simple are quickly dispelled. For even in werewolf terms, there’s something very disturbing taking place in the dark Alaskan forests. A werewolf more wolf than human and more unnatural than supernatural is on the hunt—a creature whose origins seem to spring from ancient legends of the shape-shifting Wendigo.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, Clayton and Elena find themselves confronting painful ghosts from their pasts — and an issue neither of them is eager to discuss. For one of them has been chosen to become the new Pack leader, and as every wolf knows, there can be only one Alpha. They’ve always been equals in everything. Now, when their survival depends more than ever on perfect teamwork, will instinct allow one of them to lead...and the other to follow? From Goodreads.
This is the tenth book in one of my favourite paranormal series. Kelley Armstrong tells great tales about a large group of paranormal beings. I like the early witch books and the books about the werewolves best.
I highly recommend this Women of the Otherworld series but you should start with number one: Bitten.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 7.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team.
My goal for the week was to read 4 books and I completed this goal as I read 5½ book. I had a very mixed week as I had three days where I read less than 100 pages but I also had a couple of good days and especially Sunday was a very good reading day. I have enjoyed this Read-a-Thon.

The Sea of Monsters Rick Riordan
After a summer spent
trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson
is finding his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest
problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson, a six-foot-three,
mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it
hard for Percy to have any normal friends. But things don't stay quiet
for long.
Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders that protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia. Only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name: The Bermuda Triangle.
Together with his friends, Percy must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family, one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke. From Goodreads.
I will continue this series as I find the adventure mixed with the Greek Gods interesting and in this one I like Percy's new brother.

The Last Colony John Scalzi
Retired from his
fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on
distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane
Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys
watching his adopted daughter grow up.
That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game — as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war. From Goodreads

Here are the confessions
of a vampire. Hypnotic, shocking, and chillingly erotic, this is a
novel of mesmerizing beauty and astonishing force --- a story of danger
and flight, of love and loss, of suspense and resolution, and of the
extraordinary power of the senses. It is a novel only Anne Rice could

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek God. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong. Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends, and generally trying to stay alive.
This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.
Can Percy find the lightning bolt before a fully-fledged war of the Gods erupts? From Goodreads.
A very nice quick read. It is also fun to read about the Greek Gods and their fights with each other. In this book Percy finds out he is the son of a Greek God. Percy is a likeable hero managing a lot with the help of his friends. I will definitely read more in this series.

Just Doll by Janice Daugharty
“Daugharty does a fine job of demonstrating how ordinary men and women are affected, in unpredictable ways, by race, poverty and geography and by the enduring legacy of important historical moments.”~ People Magazine
She is only seventeen when she marries into a world of privilege, mystery, heartache and passion . . .Doll Baxter is barely grown when she weds wealthy older landowner Daniel Staten in order to save her family’s impoverished farm in post-Civil War Georgia. Over the decades that follow, Doll and Daniel struggle to resolve the tensions between them. Both are strong-willed; both are rooted to the fertile southern soil.
The twists and turns of their lives together influence the fates of many around them, both black and white. “It seemed that people were just passing through only long enough for you to get to loving them, then gone as if they never were, or were somebody you had dreamed up for the sole purpose of bringing suffering. Love was dangerous suddenly; a child or husband might be with you one day and gone the next and leave you gnawing on the corner of your pillow to keep from crying out questions in the middle of the night. Then morning, there was always morning.” From Goodreads.
A historical romance about the harsh life in post-civil war Georgia. Two people who marry each other not for love but for practical reasons.
An okay book as it was free, I might read more from this author if I find her books for free.
This book qualifies for:

Bout of Books 7.0 Read-a-Thon Goals and Sign Up
Bout of Books Read-a-Thon hosted by Bout of Books.
I read about this Read-a-Thon on The True Book Addict's Blog and as I like week long reading challenges I decided I had better take part.
I have a busy week ahead of me so I won't set my goal too high.
My goal will be to read four books this week. As usual for this kind of challenge my list of books is more than four so I have a choice.

Update June 1st: As I am taking part in a lot of challenges I will now stop counting.
