Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 wrap up post

My goal for this Read-a-Thon was to take part the whole 24 hours and read at least 3 books.
Another goal was to visit at least two other blogs every hour of the Read-a-Thon

I reached my goals.

I lasted the whole 24 hours. Of course I had a few times I was struggling, around 12 hours and again around hour 21 and 22. I got through without falling asleep.

I did visit over 50 blogs over the 24 hours and even left a comment on a couple of them. This I will change again next read-a-thon as I felt it took a lot of time away from my reading and that is my main purpose of taking part in the read-a-thon.

I read 3½ books all in all.
  1. Forgiven by Jana Oliver - 417 pages
  2. Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne - 192 pages
  3. White Night by Jim Butcher - 481 pages
  4. Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! by Sara C. Roethle - 75 pages (the book is 150 pages but I only got to 50 % before the end of the read-a-thon. I have now finished the book)

Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! by Sara C. Roethle

Alexondra Meyers, known to her friends as Xoe, had a normal life. She liked her normal life, but there's a new guy in the small town of Shelby, OR, and he is anything but normal. Before Xoe can say, "Werewolf," her world is turned upside-down. Between a dark secret in Xoe's past, a best friend who's been scratched, and not to mention highschool, Xoe has a lot of thinking to do. She has to choose who she can trust, and fast . . . tomorrow's the full moon. From Goodreads.

This book is okay. I feel that the author has tried to get as many paranormal beings thrown in as fast as possible. It goes from nobody knows there are any paranormal beings to 3 different ones in a few pages. It was a quick easy read but maybe the book should have been a bit longer. That said, the main character and her friends are an interesting lot and at some point I might read the second book in the series.

White Night by Jim Butcher

Someone is targeting the city’s magic practitioners, the members of the supernatural underclass who don’t possess enough power to become full-fledged wizards. Many have vanished. Others appear to be victims of suicide. But the murderer has left a calling card at one of the crime scenes–a message for Harry Dresden, referencing the book of Exodus and the killing of witches.
Harry sets out to find the killer before he can strike again, but his investigation turns up evidence pointing to the one suspect he cannot possibly believe guilty: his half brother, Thomas. Determined to bring the real murderer to justice and clear his brother’s name, Harry attracts the attention of the White Court of vampires, becoming embroiled in a power struggle that renders him outnumbered, outclassed, and dangerously susceptible to temptation.
Harry knows that if he screws this one up, a lot of people will die–and one of them will be his brother.
From Goodreads

The witches are being killed and again it is Harry's job to find out who is doing it. This is a book filled with deceit, manipulation and secrets. Harry of course solves it all in the end.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 - hour 17 update

Hour 17 update.

I am 43 % into my third book. White Night by Jim Butcher. And I feel more awake than I did at hour 13, halfway into the read-a-thon.

My sister is fast asleep, she obviously didn't have the stamina (and I am not sure she has quite adapted to my time zone yet) to stay awake but she started her 4th book before falling asleep so she is doing okay.

I have checked the night sky for Northern Lights a couple of times but unfortunately it is a bit too cloudy tonight

Back to the reading.

Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne

The Winnie-the-Pooh stories have been loved by generations of children since Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore first made their appearance in 1926. In this first volume we meet all the friends from the Hundred Acre Wood, celebrate Eeyore's birthday, go on an "expotition" to the North Pole and lay a Heffalump trap. Accompanied by E.H. Shepard's original illustrations in colour, this is an ideal book for bedtime stories. From Amazon.

“When you see someone putting on his Big Boots, you can be pretty sure that an Adventure is going to happen.”
And it is always an adventure with Winnie-the Pooh even just a short walk in the woods. What can I say I just love Pooh and there are lots of brilliant quotes in it.
“There must be somebody there, because somebody must have said "Nobody.”

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 Mid-Event Survey

Mid-Event Survey

1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired?
2) What have you finished reading?
3) What is your favorite read so far?
4) What about your favorite snacks?
5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love!

My answers:
  1. Yes I am getting a bit sleepy and it doesn't help that my dear twin sister keeps closing her eyes a bit, even though she also keeps saying she is not asleep! I think I will have to go outside on the balcony and read for a bit - even though it is 10pm, dark and only 7 degrees C outside but it might just keep me awake.
  2. I have finished 2 books. Forgiven by Jana Oliver and Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne. I have just started White Night by Jim Butcher
  3. Forgiven by Jana Oliver was my favorite read but Winnie-the-Pooh was of course brilliant
  4. My Favourite snack was some chocolate bars, but truth be told I have eaten too much and feel a bit sick.
  5. I have been looking at quite a few blogs and I am sure I will return to some of them.

Forgiven by Jana Oliver

The days are growing darker for 17-year-old demon trapper Riley Blackthorne. With her father’s reanimated body back safely, Beck barely speaking to her because of her tryst with a hunky fallen angel and a deal freshly made with Lucifer, she has enough on her hands to last a normal teenage lifetime. Though she bargained with Heaven to save his life, her ex-boyfriend Simon has told the Vatican’s elite team of demon hunters that she’s working with Hell. So now she’s on the run, at the top of everyone’s most-wanted list.
But it’s becoming clear that this is bigger than either Riley or Beck, and rapidly getting out of control. Someone's tampering with Atlanta's Holy Water, and it’s on Riley to figure out who. On top of that, there’s something wrong with the demons; they’re working together—and refusing to die. The trappers and hunters are doing their best, but civilians are falling in harm’s way.
Caught between her bargain with Heaven and her promise to Lucifer, Riley fears the final war is coming—and it may be closer than anyone thinks..
From Goodreads

I read the first 2 books in this series in Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2011 and I thought it fitting to continue this year. I was afraid it wasn't easy to get back to the story as it was a year ago I read the last but no problem, I got sucked into the book right away. This is a brilliant continuation of the series and I am interested in seeing where the author is going with this. I will read the the next book within the next few months.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 2012

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 hour 9 update

I am not reading as much as I have the previous read-a-thons as I have decided I also want to spend some time visiting other participating blogs.

That said, I have just finished my first book.

Forgiven by Jana Oliver, 368 pages ( according to Goodreads)

I am ready to start my next book and after this war between Heaven and Hell I think I will read something light.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 - hour 5 update

Update for hour 5:

I have now read 49% of Forgiven by Jana Oliver. It is interesting to be back in this world created by Jana Oliver. I like her main character Riley. It is not easy being a teenage demon trapper.

As I am this time also looking at the blogs of other readers I am not reading as much as I had hoped. But I will keep reading.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 Introductory Questionnaire

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

My Answers:

  1. I am Reading in Nuuk, the Capital of Greenland
  2. I want to read at least 3 books the next 24 hours, I have 6 books on my list but I am not sure which one I am looking most forward to.
  3. I have a lot of snacks and I am looking forward to them all.
  4. My name is Jane, I love reading and I post my opinion of the books I have read here on my blog.
  5. This is my 3rd read-a-thon and as something new I will make sure to visit other blogs as I haven't gotten round to that the last 2 times.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012 goals

Dewey's Read-a-Thon starts in about 10 hours. I have a list of 6 books ready to go.

Forgiven by Jana Oliver.
I have this book on my list as I actually read the first 2 in the series last October at the Read-a-Thon, I am now ready to continue the series.

Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! by Sara C. Roethle

White Night by Jim Butcher

Outside in by Maria V. Snyder

Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne

A Modern Witch by Debora Geary

That is my list of 6 books. I will probably start with Forgiven by Jana Oliver, I haven't decided where to continue after that and I might even read something not on my list if I find something interesting on one of the other participating blogs.

My goal for this Read-a-Thon is to take part the whole 24 hours and read at least 3 books.
Another goal is to visit at least two other blogs every hour of the Read-a-Thon, I have taken part in two Read-a-Thons previously and usually don't get around to go visiting other blogs so that is why I want it as a goal this time.

Now I better get of to bed and get a bit of sleep before the start.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon October 13th 2012

This is where it all started! My first ever post on this blog was October 19th 2011 announcing that I was going to take part in Dewey's Read-a-Thon. I couldn't take part the whole way through as I only discovered it a few days before and therefore had some previously arranged commitments. This time I am ready and will spend the whole 24 hours as part of the Read-a-Thon. I have a visitor coming from abroad to stay with me but she will just have to bring some books to read too.

I will think about which books to read and my other goals for the Read-a-Thon and post about it a few days prior to the start. I am looking forward to have this excuse to read for 24 hours straight.

HERE are the posts for this challenge.
