2014 Quick Fix Challenge Finished

Quick fix Challenge 2014 hosted by Jessie's Book Place.

I have now completed this challenge at the highest level of Gorilla Glue: to read 30+ books. Book 30, The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan, I finished 13th of April. I will most likely end up reading as many books shorter than 300 pages as last year.

All posts for this challenge are HERE.

List of books at the bottom of this post.

I've decided to run the Quick Fix Challenge again for 2014!
So about the challenge?
I find that many times when a reading challenge has to do with a book's size it usually about reading bigger books. Sometimes, because I'm in between books, life is getting out of hand, or things are just getting in the way, there's just not enough time to read a big book. Who says bigger is better anyway? Sometimes things break and all you need is a little tape and it'll hold. So this is the "Quick fix Challenge" whether it's a love for smaller books, or just trying to squeeze in a quick read, or maybe times running out and you need to read in some more books quickly. This is a challenge about reading books with less than 300 pages.

Challenge Details:

  • The challenge runs from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014.
  • Sign ups will be open until mid December.
  • You don't have to be a blogger to participate. However, leave a comment and tell me what level  you're aiming for.
  • For bloggers, post up a challenge sign up post saying what level you've signed up for. Be sure to sign-up with your sign-up post in the linky.
  • You don't have to review the books you read however if you do, you will be able to post your links to your reviews (the post will be up on New Years day).
  • Books have to have less than 300 pages to count.
  • Books such as MG/YA, graphic novels/manga, audio, rereads, anthologies and short stories, can count toward your goal.
  • Feel free to crossover the books you read for this challenge with other challenges.
(If you have any questions feel free to ask, I feel like I might be missing something here.)

Now the Levels/It will hold with:

String: 5 books

Paperclips: 15 books

Duck tape: 25 books

Gorilla glue: 30+ books

Alien Stars by C.J. Cherryh, Joe Haldeman, Timothy Zahn

Three great authors, three alien dooms.
Cherryh: In Downbelow Station earthmen and colonists fought to the death. Now Earth and Union must join forces against an enemy that could not surrender.
Haldeman: One moment they are lords of Creation - the next Joe Haldeman's humans are the helpless prey of unexpected enemies.
Zahn: Timothy Zahn's aliens were obviously primitive - so why were their weapons far beyond any invented by man? From backcover.

Three very different science fiction short stories about war.
The two first stories were okay and had some surprises in them but I didn't like the last very much.

The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan

What dangers do runaway demigods Luke and Thalia face on their way to Camp Half-Blood? Are Percy and Annabeth up to the task of rescuing stolen goods from a fire-breathing giant who doesn't take kindly to intruders? How exactly are Leo, Piper, and Jason supposed to find a runaway table, dodge a band of party-loving Maenads (who just might be a little psychotic), and stave off a massive explosion...all in one hour or less? With his trademark wit and creativity, Rick Riordan answers these questions and more in three never-before-seen short stories that provide vital back-story to the Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson books. Original art, enlightening character interviews and profiles, puzzles, and a quiz add to the fun in this action-packed collection. From Goodreads.

Fun to be back with the Demigods. I enjoy reading about their adventures and it makes me want to read the last book in the series, The Blood of Olympus, now. Just have to wait till July.
I am impressed by the story written by Haley.

Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
From goodreads.

I have to admit I really like the books by Ilona Andrews. It is the first in a new series about an innkeeper for paranormal and alien species. It is a brilliant idea and especially the close link between the inn and the innkeeper. I am looking forward to read more about Dina. And of course see how her relationships with Sean, the werewolf and Arland, the vampire pan out.  There is also quite a bit of humour which I like.
This book was written as short episodes on the authors website before being published. They are doing the same with the second book in the series but I don't have the patience to read it bit by bit, I will rather wait and read the whole novel when it is published.

Vinter-Eventyr by Karen Blixen

In Isak Dinesen's universe, the magical enchantment of the fairy tale and the moral resonance of myth coexist with an unflinching grasp of the most obscure human strengths and weaknesses. A despairing author abandons his wife, but in the course of a long night's wandering, he learns love's true value and returns to her, only to find her a different woman than the one he left. A landowner, seeking to prove a principle, inadvertently exposes the ferocity of mother love. A wealthy young traveler melts the hauteur of a lovely woman by masquerading as her aged and loyal servant.
Shimmering and haunting, Dinesen's Winter's Tales transport us, through their author's deft guidance of our desire to imagine, to the mysterious place where all stories are born.
From Goodreads.

Not a book for me. I found most of the stories rather depressing. I have not read much by Karen Blixen and if this was the only book I would not read any more but I enjoyed Out of Africa so I won't completely dismiss her.

The Inconvenient Duchess by Christine Merrill

Dear Cici and Father,
I have come to Devon and married a duke. And I'm more tired and hungry than I have ever been in my life. Please let me come home.
Compromised and wedded on the same day, Lady Miranda was fast finding married life not to her taste. A decaying manor and a secretive husband were hardly the stuff of girlish dreams. Yet every time she looked at dark, brooding Marcus Radwell, Duke of Haughleigh, she felt inexplicably compelled—and determined—to make their marriage real!
From Goodreads.

I liked the protagonist Miranda who was a lady but had never been able to live as one because of her father. Also the Duke is very likeable despite his temper and harsh reactions to the events. A good historical romance with a happy ending.

An Unlikely Match by Barbara Dunlop

Morgan Holbrook has a PhD in jet propulsion, a plum research position at CalTech and a sexy, new neighbor who is way out of his league. He’s got all the confidence in the world where it comes to applied physics, but he’s never been the guy who gets the girl.
Cheerleader Amelia Camden has sworn off boyfriends, focusing instead on her budding acting career. But when her nerdy, next door neighbor passes up his high school reunion, party enthusiast Amelia is determined to change his mind.
Wanting his former classmates to appreciate Morgan the way she does, as a brilliant, compassionate, engaging man, she goads him into a haircut, a great suit and a pair of contact lenses. Morgan plays along with the sexy Amelia. Who wouldn’t? But when her flattery turns to flirtation, he knows it’s all part of the act.
From Goodreads.

This was sweet. A group of oldies playing matchmakers between their grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The couple Morgan and Amelia are very different but an okay couple. The ones I really like are the scheming oldies. A fun read.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

A copy of Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them resides in almost every wizarding household in the country. Now, Muggles too have the chance to discover where the Quintaped lives, what the Puffskein eats, and why it is best not to leave milk out for a Knarl.
Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Comic Relief U.K., which means that the pounds and Galleons you exchange for it will do magic beyond the powers of any wizard. If you feel that this is insufficient reason to part with your money, I can only hope that passing wizards feel more charitable if they ever see you being attacked by a Manticore.

This was okay but I would have liked more comment from Ron and Harry to make it more fun. But this is still an okay read for Harry Potter fans.

When First They Met by Debbie Macomber

From the moment Jo Marie sits next to Paul inside the Seattle Seahawks’ stadium, she feels a spark. Paul’s striking blue eyes and kind smile tell her that he’s someone special—different from any man she’s met before. When they strike up a conversation, Jo Marie and Paul realize how much they have in common, yet there’s one thing keeping them from a fairy-tale ending: Paul is in the military and will ship out of Seattle within the next six weeks. As Jo Marie wonders if she should once again open her heart, she decides that, no matter the stakes, she can’t forgo her chance at true love. From Goodreads.

This is a very short story telling how Jo Marie and Paul meet. I have not read The Inn at Rose Harbour  which I think would be a good idea to get more out of this short story.

Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec

Claire is a twenty-something, single mom that grudgingly helps her best friend sell sex toys while she attempts to make enough money to start her own business to give her foul-mouthed, but extremely loveable (when he's asleep) toddler a better life.
When Carter, the one-night-stand from her past that changed her life forever, shows up in her hometown bar without any recollection of her besides her unique chocolate scent, Claire will make it a point that he remembers her this time.
With Carter's undisguised shock at suddenly finding out he has a four-year-old son and Claire's panic that her stretch marks and slim to none bedroom experience will send the man of her dreams heading for the hills, the pair will do whatever they can to get their happily ever after.
From Goodreads.

I read this because I saw a review which said the reader giggled the whole way through. I didn't. My humour must be very different to hers. Having the word vagina in every other sentence whether it is said by an adult or a 4 year old is, to me, not funny.
I do like a nice romance, but this was too crude.

Hell of a Journey: On Foot Through the Scottish Highlands in Winter by Mike Cawthorne

Hell of a Journey describes what is arguably the last great journey to be undertaken in Britain: the entire Scottish Highlands on foot in one winter. It is a vivid and evocative account of a remarkable trek and celebrates the uniqueness of the Highlands, the scenery and ecology of 'the last wilderness in Europe'. From Goodreads.

I have a thing for Scotland, though not walking in the mountains as I hate walking uphill and absolutely detest walking downhill. But this was a very enjoyable book as it brought back a lot of good memories.
Camping in the Knoydart area. Living just down the road between Aviemore and Cairngorm. Cycling from Aviemore to Dalwhinnie. Visiting Glencoe.
I don't know all the mountains (or hills, they are "only" around 1000 metres) he walks in but I know the areas.

WitchHunt by Emma Mills

‘I know it’s selfish, but I don’t want you to go,’ Daniel said, a couple of minutes later.
I looked at him and smiled.
‘I’ll be fine, I will.’
‘You’d better be. I don’t know what I’d do without you. Those months I stupidly spent apart from you… they were torment for me,’ he said.
‘They were torment for me too.’
As the Christmas season is ripped apart by the news that Jess’ old friend Alex has been turned into a vicious killer, festivities are dropped, Jess returns to England and the hunt begins. But Alex isn’t the only one being hunted, for Mary has found a way to extinguish the entire bloodline of Malden witches, and it is Jess’s book of shadows that’s the key. As things hot up, Jess finds she must leave Daniel and the safety of Manchester in a final hunt for her nemesis, Mary. In a fight-off that only one of them can survive, loved ones will fall… daemons will rise… but who will survive?
From Goodreads.

I like reading about witches and I like reading about vampires. The protagonist Jess is both and sometimes has difficulties accepting her vampire part.
I have enjoyed this WitchBlood series by Emma Mills and as this book seems to be the last in the series  I will keep an eye out to see if she publishes anything else.

How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

THE STORY BEGINS in the first volume of Hiccup's How to Train Your Dragon memoirs...
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But it wasn't always like that. In fact, in the beginning, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the most put upon Viking you'd ever seen. Not loud enough to make himself heard at dinner with his father, Stoick the Vast; not hard enough to beat his chief rival, Snotlout, at Bashyball, the number one school sport and CERTAINLY not stupid enough to go into a cave full of dragons to find a pet... It's time for Hiccup to learn how to be a Hero.
 From Goodreads.

I wanted to read this as I have seen the film. In my opinion the film is better than the book but it is most likely because I saw the film before reading the book. They are very different. In the film the Viking village is constantly attacked by dragons whereas in the book they keep dragons as pets. The way to become a warrior is to steal a baby dragon from the dragon nursery and train it. The book is still cute.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

An international sensation, this hilarious, feel-good novel is narrated by an oddly charming and socially challenged genetics professor on an unusual quest: to find out if he is capable of true love.
Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand, whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is simply not wired for romance. So when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a “wonderful” husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks upon The Wife Project. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which he approaches all things, Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical—most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver.
Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intelligent—and on a quest of her own. She is looking for her biological father, a search that a certain DNA expert might be able to help her with. Don's Wife Project takes a back burner to the Father Project and an unlikely relationship blooms, forcing the scientifically minded geneticist to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that love is not always what looks good on paper.
The Rosie Project is a moving and hilarious novel for anyone who has ever tenaciously gone after life or love in the face of overwhelming challenges.
From Goodreads.

I decided to read this as I have seen a lot of good reviews about it indicating that it should be very humorous. Though there are funny bits in-between, it is not hilarious. A complicated romance with an odd couple.

Speechless by Hannah Harrington

Everyone knows that Chelsea Knot can’t keep a secret
Until now. Because the last secret she shared turned her into a social outcast—and nearly got someone killed.
Now Chelsea has taken a vow of silence—to learn to keep her mouth shut, and to stop hurting anyone else. And if she thinks keeping secrets is hard, not speaking up when she’s ignored, ridiculed and even attacked is worse.
But there’s strength in silence, and in the new friends who are, shockingly, coming her way—people she never noticed before; a boy she might even fall for. If only her new friends can forgive what she’s done. If only she can forgive herself.
From Goodreads.

Chelsea has always been the one to gossip and tell everybody's secrets. She shares a discovery with a group of people and somebody is nearly killed. This was an interesting book. The main character goes from very dislikeable to likeable and there is a serious issue in it too.

Night of the Purple Moon by Scott Cramer

Abby, 13, is looking forward to watching the moon turn purple, unaware that bacteria from a passing comet will soon kill off older teens and adults. She must help her brother and baby sister survive in this new world, but all the while she has a ticking time bomb inside of her--adolescence. From Goodreads.

Another free book that was way better than expected. The scary part of this book is the description of how they survive. The group the book follows on Castine Island is a good group. What Stays in Vegas by Beth Labonte

Bored administrative assistant, Tessa Golden, is trapped in a life of lousy weather, irritating bosses, and mind-numbing secretarial work. Her dreams of being an artist have rapidly deteriorated into building things out of paperclips while on hold with tech support. To make matters even worse, the love of her life has gone off and married another woman.
So when Tessa is suddenly transferred to the Las Vegas branch of her company - playing wingwoman to her freshly divorced boss, juggling a client from hell, and catching the eye of one very eligible coworker - will her life finally be shaken up enough to straighten itself out?
From Goodreads.

I enjoyed this more than expected and there were quite a few funny elements in it. Her best friend and love of her life, that she can't have as he is married, seems nice but turns out to be a jerk. Of course the story is predictable but that is okay.

The Highlander's Hope by Cali MacKay

When Dr. Catriona Ross discovers clues to a long lost highland treasure, her only hope of finding the jewels is to obtain the help of Scotland's most eligible bachelor and playboy, Iain MacCraigh.
Iain can't believe his luck when he finds out the jewels are hidden away somewhere on his land-- and it doesn't hurt that the historian looking for them has curves to go with her smarts. With his brother betting the family fortune, this is the life line he desperately needs.
The odds are against them, and with word getting out about the jewels, they're not the only ones on the hunt. Time's running out, but can they learn to trust each other, or will they lose the jewels and true love in the process?
From Goodreads.

This was an okay romance with suspense. It is a quick and easy read. As I have lived in the Highlands I like most things Scottish. I liked the side character Angus and as the next book is about him and it was extremely cheap I have actually already bought it.
