November 2013 Update

My November reading started very slow, one of the reasons could be all the reading in October. But luckily it picked up again thanks to (again) Tower Teams Challenge. I have read 17 books in November.

I have been working hard in November both to finish some more of my 2013 challenges and also to post all the missing finished posts and I am very close to having caught up.

List of books:
  1. How (Not) to Kiss a Gargoyle by Elizabeth A. Reeves
  2. Vampires: The Recent Undead by Paula Guran (Editor)
  3. Leopard Moon by Jeanette Battista

Steam & Sorcery by Cindy Spencer

Sir Merrick Hadrian hunts monsters, both human and supernatural. A Knight of the Order of the Round Table, his use of magick and the technologies of steam power have made him both respected and feared. But his considerable skills are useless in the face of his greatest challenge, guardianship of five unusual children. At a loss, Merrick enlists the aid of a governess.
Miss Caroline Bristol is reluctant to work for a bachelor, but she needs a position, and these former street children touch her heart. While she tends to break any mechanical device she touches, it never occurs to her that she might be something more than human. All she knows is that Merrick is the most dangerously attractive man she's ever met—and out of reach for a mere governess.
When conspiracy threatens to blur the distinction between humans and monsters, Caroline and Merrick must join forces, and the fate of humanity hinges upon their combined skills of steam and sorcery
.
From Goodreads.

This was okay but I am not sure I will read any more in this series. It also seems that the series continues with different main characters and has people from this book just as side characters. The children in this story are very likeable.

This book qualifies for:
Goodreads 2013 Reading Challenge
Serious Readers 2013
2013 Paranormal Reading Challenge (vampires and others)

Thankfully Reading Weekend 2013 Start

Thankfully Reading Weekend hosted by Jenn at Jenn's Bookshelves.

This is my third year taking part in this challenge. My goal will not be very high this year as I have plans for two of the four days.

My goal will be to read 2 books during this weekend.

The two books I hope to read are The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks and Tethers by Jack Croxall.

Even though I have other plans for some of the weekend I am happy to be able to take part in this challenge again. Thank you for hosting Jenn.

2013 A-Z Reading Challenge Finished

2013 A-Z Reading Challenge hosted by Escape With Dollycas.

Details
This challenge will run from January 1st, 2012 until December 31st, 2013.
You can join anytime.
Crossovers to other challenges are allowed and encouraged!
It’s an alphabet challenge!!! The challenge is to read one book starting with every letter of the alphabet.
So there are two different ways you can set up your own A-Z Reading Challenge.
A - How I plan to do it: Make a list on your blog from A-Z. Throughout the year, as you go along, add the books you are reading to the list.  Towards the end of the year, you can check and see which letters you are missing and find books to fit.

OR
B - Make a list now of 26 books, picking one for each letter of the alphabet. For example: A – The Azalea Assault B- Blue Monday C – Crops and Robbers D – A Deadly Grind etc.
Books can be read in any order and all formats – print – e-book – audio – are acceptable for this challenge!

Vil du forblive i troen?
From back of book.

Jack is used to danger. His asthma has nearly killed him for more than once. But his new home has a danger he's never known before - the spirits of the dead. They can't breathe. But in Jack's house they can. Chase. Hide. Scream. Only Jack can see them. Only he can hear them. And only he can learn their secrets in time to save his mother and himself. From Goodreads.

I was surprised how much I liked this ghost story. Boy tells mum he can see ghosts, mum doesn't believe and everything goes bad from there. I kept turning the pages to see what happened next.  An easy read but it is still quite dark.

This book qualifies for:

Crazy Challenge Connection RaT #18, November 27 - December 3 Start

Crazy Challenge Connection RaT #18 hosted by Crazy Challenge Connection on Goodreads.

Yep, it's that time of the month again! Our next Read-a-thon will begin at 12:01am Wednesday, November 27, and continue until midnight on Tuesday, Decemberber 3, a total of seven days. (Use your local time for start/end times.) We're hoping that this will help you finish your November reading lists/challenges and get a head start on next month's reading!

Note: Yes, we know that (US) Thanksgiving is right smack in the middle of this RaT, but we're hoping that the holiday might give some of you a little *more time to read than usual. For those who are going to be busy with family most of the weekend, we've extended the RaT from our usual 5-6 days to 7 full days this time!

Again, our goals for this RaT will be to:
(1) complete any challenges ending in November that you haven't finished yet and start on December's challenges (when appropriate) and/or
(2) work on that pile of library books that's waiting for your attention and/or
(3) read anything you want to read, just because!

If none of these goals fit your reading plan, then create your own goal and let us know what you plan to accomplish :) As you read, be sure to check in here and let us know what you've read, how it fits your goals, how you rate the book, and anything else you want to tell us about it!

My goal for this CCC RaT #18 will be to hopefully finish at least 4 books towards finishing some of my yearly challenges.

For Nicholas Sparks:
The Lucky One
Safe Haven

For Steampunk:
Tethers by Jack Croxall
A Clockwork Christmas by J.K. Coi and more (audio)

For Paranormal:
Red Shift by Alan Garner

for Stuck in a Rut:
Unwholly by Neal Shusterman
Maid for the Billionaire by Ruth Cardello

Tower Teams Read 2013 Finished

Tower Teams Read 2013 hosted by Nothing But Reading Challenges.

~Tower Teams~
                                                            First to Read 2,013 Books

Goal: The first team to reach 2013 books read, wins! Then the team challenge starts over again.
When: Starts January 1, 2013 and goes until the first team reaches 2,013 books read.
How: We will take all the people who sign up and divide them equally into groups, taking into account the number of books they read in 2012, but otherwise we will be using a "ramdomizer" to assign. When you go to the sign-up thread, PLEASE INDICATE the NUMBER of BOOKS you read in 2012. (Just to even out the teams. Thanks!)
◈ Books must be >170 pages. I found several items on the Internet that say
200 location numbers on a Kindle are equivalent to 10 - 11 pages. When NO
hardback or paperback editions are available for reverence, covert with the
    lower number.
◈ Audio books are allowed. (For page numbers, audiobooks should be compared
    to the paper edition.)
◈ No graphic novels. (Sorry.)
◈ Any genre counts.
◈ "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been a year since you have read the book.
This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.

◈ When a team reaches 2,013, we will change the end date of the challenge. The first
team to post - regardless of the other team eventually posting more books - wins.
We'll check to see who places.
...

The second part of this challenge officially finished the 17th of November when one team made it to 1350 books. I think my team did really well as we got 3rd place.

Tower Teams Read ended up being in two parts as first round finished in April.
All in all I read 165 books over 160 pages for this challenge.
As a group we will continue at least for a while to see when we get to the 1350 books, as of 17th of November we had read 1017.

THIS is the bookshelf for the first part of the challenge.
And HERE is the bookshelf for the second part. (the bookshelf for the second part will have books from after the17th of November)

2013 Audio Book Challenge Finished

2013 Audio Book Challenge hosted by Teresa's Reading Corner.

Welcome to the Original Audio Book Challenge. This challenge is for Audio Book lovers as well as those who are brand new to them.
There are five levels to the challenge

  •     Flirting-Listen to 6 Audio Books
  •     Going Steady- Listen to 12 Audio Books
  •     Lover- Listen to 25 Audio Books
  •     Married-Listen to more than 25 Audio Books
  •     You Define the Relationship- Create your own challenge (choose your own name and level    starting as low or going as high as you’d like)
This is a fairly laid back challenge and I want it to be as enjoyable as possible.
  •     Audio Books can be any genre
  •    You can cross challenges
  •     You don’t have to be a blogger to participate. You can tell us about what you are listening to in the comments of the monthly link up.
Official Challenge dates: 1/1/2013-12/31/2013

My goal for this challenge was Flirting-Listen to 6 audio books. At one point I didn't actually think I would make it. I finished my first audio book in June! But I am getting use to it and have also found out how much the narrator means for a successful listening experience.

I reached my goal of 6 books the 14th of November when I finished The Moon Of Gomrath by Alan Garner. Since then I have heard one more and I think I might at least hear one more before the year ends.

This challenge has been very good for me, I will still rather read a book but I now appreciate listening to books when I can't sit still and read.

If this audio challenge returns in 2014 I will take part again and maybe try to aim for the next level.

List of Audio books:
  1. The Dead Girls' Dance by Rachel Caine
  2. Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs
  3. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel by Deborah Moggach
  4. Dreams Underfoot: The Newford Collection by Charles de Lint
  5. Vampires: The Recent Undead by Paula Guran (Editor)
  6. The Moon Of Gomrath by Alan Garner
  7. Elidor by Alan Garner
THIS is where all the post for this challenge can be found.

Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
When you sign up in the linky put the direct link to your post about joining the 2013 Witches & Witchcraft Reading Challenge.
You can move up levels, but no moving down.
Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2013, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.
Have some Witchy Good Fun !!!

The Levels:
Initiate:  Read 1 - 5 Witchy Books
Maiden:  Read 6 - 10 Witchy Books
Mother:  Read 11 - 15 Witchy Books
Crone:  Read 16 - 20 Witchy Books

This is the second year running I am taking part in this challenge.  Last year I ended up reading 41 witchy books so I entered this year at level Crone to read 16-20 Witchy books.

I reached 20 books the 9th of September when I finished The Owl Service by Alan Garner. Since then I have read another 15 for a total of 35 Witchy books. I don't think I will beat last years numbers but I will keep adding books the rest of the year to see how close to last years numbers I will get.

If  Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf is hosting this challenge again I will definitely take part as I love reading witchy books.

THIS is where all posts for this challenge are.

Buried Child by Sam Shepard

A newly revised edition of an American classic, Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize—winning Buried Child is as fierce and unforgettable as it was when it was first produced more than twenty-five years ago.
A scene of madness greets Vince and his girlfriend as they arrive at the squalid farmhouse of Vince’s hard-drinking grandparents, who seem to have no idea who he is. Nor does his father, Tilden, a hulking former All-American footballer, or his uncle, who has lost one of his legs to a chain saw. Only the memory of an unwanted child, buried in an undisclosed location, can hope to deliver this family
. From Goodreads.

This is one weird and absurd play. I am not sure how much I liked it but I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next and that is what got it 3 Polar Bears instead of just 2. This play has not made me want to read more by Sam Shepard.
